Student Successes

Congrats to Annie Vonasek, she is an outstanding student, who I had the pleasure of teaching for both World 2 Honors and AP Psychology.  She was selected this year for Governor’s School at Radford College.

Isaiah Barnes is a born leader.  When his classmates are talking at the wrong time or misbehaving in other ways, he is always the first to tell them to stop.  Students always listen to what he asks them to do immediately because they respect him and follow his lead.  Isaiah is always respectful, honest and can be counted on to set the proper example for his friends.

Compliments to the Woodson Key Club

Key Club volunteers at Britepaths

Britepaths wanted to send a thank you to the Woodson Key Club for their amazing efforts in collecting 929.6 LBS of food valued at $1,598.91 over the weekend. This and throughout the summer is a time that our pantry starts to gets low.  We really appreciate that they worked with us ahead of time to find out about our specific needs for the pantry. This donation is a huge help to start off our summer.

Congratulations to Conor Casey

Conor was named National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) High School Male Diver of the Year! This topped off a year where Conor won  the  Virginia High School League 6A Dive Meet.

Produce Industry Cycling Event Supports Fairfax Salad Bars

The Tour de Fresh, a 275-mile, 3-day cycling event will take place in California July 25-27 with eight cyclists riding for salad bars in Fairfax County Public Schools!

The event is organized by the California Giant Foundation and supports the national Salad Bars to Schools initiative which has provided salad bars to over 5,000 schools nationwide over the last six years. The Tour de Fresh has raised funds for 150 of those.

The 50 participants of the Tour de Fresh, now in its fourth year, are produce industry cycling enthusiasts, passionate about child nutrition and ensuring all students have access to fresh fruits and vegetables every day at school. Each of the 50 cyclists selects a school district to support from a "salad bar waiting list" provided by the Salad Bars to Schools initiative. Cyclists raise funds from businesses, colleagues, family and friends. Now the Fairfax community can support these riders by visiting the Tour website and sponsoring one of the FCPS team (finds from all riders come back to FCPS).

"The support of events like the Tour de Fresh and Salad Bars to Schools enables us to fully realize our goal of having salad bars at every FCPS elementary school," says FCPS Nutrition Services Director Rodney Taylor, "We're very grateful to these riders, who are so passionate about getting more fresh fruits and vegetables onto our students' plates."

Take a few minutes to view the Tour de Fresh video to learn more about the event, then click to donate to our Fairfax team! Thanks to our riders:

Joey Bruno, Tanimura & Antle | Jonathan Sinclair, Enza Zaden | Homer Mejia, Western Precooling | Rick Enrico, Fruit Growers Supply | Matthew Vetter, Tessemae's | Ty Burns, PMA | Paul Sheid, Ocean Mist Farms | Jeff Bruff, Rock Garden

Fairfax County Public Schools currently has 20 salad bars across the district.  Of these 20, seven salad bars were funded by the Salad Bars to Schools initiative, through donations made by United Fresh Start Foundation, a founding partner of the Salad Bars to Schools initiative and a member of the Tour de Fresh organizing committee.
