WSES Weekly Update

June 16, 2017

Dear Willow Springs Families,

We have finished the second to last week of school with many activities, projects, and presentations. Our students continue to amaze us with their creativity, hard work, and enthusiastic approach to the learning process.

Some of the many activities that our students participated in this week were   band concerts, string concerts, fourth grade living wax museum, SCA Wacky Tacky Day, sixth grade balloon battle, second graders releasing Monarch butterflies and the third annual Game of Awesomeness.

The sixth grade service project has one more week to go; please consider donating non-perishable food goods for the Western Fairfax Christian Ministry (WFCM) food pantry. Our fifth graders are finalizing their Global Awareness Technology projects and second graders will celebrate "Butterfly Day" on Monday.

We would love to have café volunteers next week for Monday & Tuesday. Please sign up below if you are able to help.

Have a great weekend!

More Cafeteria Volunteers Needed

gf

Can you help?

We are looking for parents to help us in the cafeteria this Monday, June 19, and Tuesday, June 20.

What does the job entail?

Lunch is served between 11 and 1:30 each day. We’d be happy to have volunteers rotate through during the lunch block. Students need help opening packages, retrieving additional utensils, and adult supervision.

What do you gain from the experience?

While helping our students in the cafeteria, you will be rewarded handsomely with big smiles, high fives and many thanks.

6th Grade Service Project

June 1 - June 22

jkl

Each year sixth grader students participate in a service project as part of their end of year activities.  For the past several years, students have collected non-perishable food items for the Western Fairfax Christian Ministry (WFCM) food pantry.  WFCM provides food for families in need who live in the western portion of Fairfax County.  It is ‘client choice’ meaning clients make their own food selections during their monthly visit.  All sixth grade classrooms set their own goal of over 100 food items per class. To date 766.80 pounds of food items have been donated.  Last year we donated 1,322.50 lbs and are trying to exceed last year's total.  Thank you to everyone who has donated to this worthy cause. We will be collecting food items through the last day of school on Friday, June 23.

The pantry has identified a specific need for “Kid Foods” such as pop top Ravioli, macaroni & cheese, fruit cups, snacks, treats, milk or juice containers. Other items needed are canned meat, Ramen noodles, cereal, etc., but they gladly accept all non-perishable items.

UNEXPECTED SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION

THIS SUMMER!

Fairfax County will be holding a "special election" this summer to fill a sudden vacancy in one of the At-Large seats on the FCPS School Board. While the particular date for this "special election" has not yet been set, it will take place this summer. Please continue to check in with local media sources to find out more. More importantly, please come out to vote in this School Board election. It's important that parents participate in the election of those who will help direct our school system!
