Herndon ES Garden Corner

A big THANK YOU to HES parents, Amanda Geary and Jill Olinger,  for their continued support of the HES Garden.  They believe this should be a collaborative effort between FCPS instructional and support services, as well as community partnerships.

  • For two years in a row, they applied for and won the Department of Facilities and Transportation Schoolyard Stewardship Mini Grant of $2,300 for the purpose of establishing the garden and using it as a teaching resource
  • They applied for and received the Dominion Virginia Power's Charitable Giving and the Dominion Foundation Grant of $2,500.
  • Mom's Organic Market donated vegetables for our 'Eat the Whole Plant' activity as well as seeds. They have also sent multiple garden volunteers, who helped collect compost in the cafeteria.
  • The Sweet Virginia Foundation came to facilitate a honey tasting for Mrs. Myer's 6th grade class which included tastes of some very rare honey from Pitcairn Island. They brought an exhibition hive to show the students. We are also using bee curriculum that they are developing on their web site.

Please contact Amanda Geary and Jill Vinson at HESGarden@gmail.com with any questions or if you would like to volunteer.   Come help our garden program "grow"!
