Greetings,
After
a very busy Spring Semester, the School Board officially adopted the Fiscal
Year 2018 Budget at last Thursday's Board meeting. In addition, the Board has
selected Dr. Scott Brabrand as our Superintendent Finalist. As noted
in the official press release, Dr. Brabrand has spent most of his career with
FCPS as a teacher, principal and regional superintendent. His warmth, humility, passion to serve the needs of all students, willingness to seek out diverse perspectives, and deep commitment to fostering collaboration will make him an outstanding leader for
our school system.
Listed below are some important
announcements, upcoming summer events, and committee volunteer opportunities. I
will be scheduling office hours later this month as the school year winds down,
and the Board begins planning for next year.
In the meantime, if I can be of any
assistance to you or your family, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Best wishes,
Megan

The
Fairfax County School Board has adopted the FY 2018 Approved Budget of $2.8 billion. I am very pleased that this
budget prioritizes teacher compensation as well as ensures salary raises that
are comparable to county employees. Two of my budget amendments focused on
minimizing a class size increase, and preventing a $100 annual fee for high
school athletes. The Board ultimately voted to institute an annual one-time $50
fee for high school students who participate in extra-curricular activities. Click

related to the approved budget.
Fairfax County’s third annual Environmental Education Conference will be held on June 29, 2017. Deadline to register is June 8. This program is free for high school and college students and will be hosted at the National Wildlife Federation in Reston. For details, click here.
Every two
years Fairfax County places a school construction bond referendum on the
ballot, so this upcoming November ballot will include the 2017 School Bond.
There are two Braddock District schools slated to receive funding: Braddock Elementary and Frost Middle School.
I am seeking two Braddock District
citizens who are willing to serve on the Citizen's Bond Committee. The
committee typically meets 9 times from July-November in the Tyson’s Corner
area. Tasks include communicating support for the bond to community and home
owner associations, business chambers, as well as distributing information
electronically and in print (yard signs, shirts, stickers, Facts booklets).
If you are interested in
volunteering, please email your resume and a brief statement on why you would
like to serve on this committee to me and my assistant Cheryl Austin.
Each
School Board Member will be appointing a citizen from their district to serve
on the Mathematics Basal Instructional Materials Adoption Committee. Therefore,
I invite you to email your resume and a brief statement on why you would like
to serve on this committee to me and my assistant Cheryl Austin. This Committee
will review textbooks and other instructional materials for K-12 math courses.
The committee will meet Mondays: July 10, 17, 24 and 31, 2017 from 4:00 to 9:00
p.m.
