Thank you for the privilege

of serving as your

School Board Representative

It is with great sadness that I announce my resignation from the Fairfax County School Board, effective May 31, 2017. Thank you for the opportunity to work with you on education policy and governance of our school system.  It has been my honor and pleasure to serve the constituents of Fairfax County.

As a graduate of Fairfax County Public Schools and a mom of three current FCPS students, I understand the passion our parents have for their children’s education.  I recognize that our parents and community members are involved in our schools and offer unique insights and perspective.   With that in mind, when I ran as a candidate for the School Board, I pledged that your voices would be heard and considered as our School Board developed policies.

When I reached out to you, you responded. Through social media, emails, phone calls, town hall meetings, and in-person office hour discussions, you shared your concerns, suggestions, and recommendations.  We listened to one another and participated in thoughtful conversations and shared different viewpoints. Together we discussed ideas and innovations to improve our school system.

The decision to resign was not an easy one, but a necessary one in the interest of my family.  My husband’s work is taking us overseas and my focus must shift to supporting my family during this transition to a new country.  I take pride in the work our board and this community have undertaken over the course of my term; including the search for a new superintendent, the search for a new auditor general, and the ongoing effort to develop and implement two fiscal year budgets which prioritized competitive teacher salaries.

As I leave the School Board, I wish the best of luck to my colleagues continuing their terms and the work they will be doing on behalf of our students, families, and community for the excellence of Fairfax County Public Schools.

Sincerely,

Jeanette Hough
