Dear Holmes Families:
4 SOLs down, and 6 to go! All of our students have completed their Reading SOLs, and the 8th graders finished their Civics SOL exam today. I have been so impressed with the focus of our students this week and the great attendance for our state testing. We appreciate all of the support from parents at this critical time for our students. Next week, the focus is Math. Students take the Math 6 SOL will take it next Tuesday and Wednesday, and students in Algebra and Geometry will take their test on Thursday. (NOTE: For our students who are in Math 6 Advanced/Honors, they will take the Math 7 SOL on June 2nd or June 5th.)
There are 2 events coming up this week that I have highlighted below. Fairfax County Police Department's Gang Unit will be at Holmes on Wednesday night to share information with parents. Also, Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross is hosting a Teen Resilience workshop on Thursday night as part of Mental Health Awareness Month. See flyers below for details.
Just a reminder that next Friday (May 26th) is a 2-hour early release day, so there will be no after school activities that day. Thank you, and have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Margaret Barnes

As a follow-up to the Mason District Town Hall on Gang Awareness that was held in March, we will be hosting an information night for parents only on Wednesday, May 24th. Representatives from Holmes, the FCPS Office of Student Safety & Wellness, and the Fairfax County Police Department Gang Unit will present to parents. Interpreters in Spanish will be present, and child care will be provided.
We have been excited to learn about a few additional summer opportunities for students this summer:

2. Luther Jackson Middle School's PTA has invited interested Rising 8th Graders from Holmes Middle School to participate in their TJ Prep Camp this summer. If you are interested, more details are here. Flyers will be available in the Holmes MS Main Office as well.
3. Dr. J. E. Lin from George Mason University will be sponsoring the 2017 Summer Enrichment Program in Mathematics and Technology for Talented Youth (MTTY). Registration forms are available at the link and in the Holmes MS Main Office.
