Cardinal Connection: May 2017

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Cherry Run Parents and Students,

It is hard to believe that May is upon us! As the fourth quarter moves past the mid-point and we slide towards the end of the school year we still have a lot of great things going on here at school. There are several field trips that occur in May, class celebrations, and Mother’s Day activities. We will hold our Kindergarten Orientation on May 8th. Classes are continuing to teach content and perform our end of year assessments (DRA, SOL, etc.). Please remember to make SOL testing days as “normal” as possible for your student. If “we” (home and school) don’t make a big deal out of it they will have much less stress to worry about.

In May we will celebrate Memorial Day and May 29th is a school holiday.  Since we will be conducting SOL and DRA tests from May 15 – June 2 we are limiting parent volunteers to afternoon support only. Classroom teachers will share when they need help in their classrooms and we are limiting parents to those times. While we are not putting a lot of emphasis on SOL testing, we do want to maintain a distraction free environment for the students and we test in every part of the building every day.

I wanted to take a few lines to remind parents that it is never ok to just drop in on a teacher before, during, or after school without an appointment. Before school teachers are busy readying last minute things for the students and welcoming students to the classroom. After school, teachers are trying to wrap up their day, get cleaned up and ready for the next day, and grade papers/make notes so that they can get home to their own families. Even a “quick second” is very disruptive for them. If you need to talk to a teacher face to face you MUST have an appointment to do so. Please do not just “pop in” to a teacher’s classroom before, during, or after school.

Also, the weather is getting warmer and the students are reverting back to shorts and t-shirts. Please ensure that the clothes students are wearing fit appropriately. They may have ‘outgrown’ some of the stuff they wore last fall.  Shorts should have 3” inseams (i.e. no ‘short shorts’) and shirts should cover bellies, neck lines, and have two inches of cloth on the shoulders (i.e. no spaghetti straps). Lastly, students may NOT wear flip flops or open toed shoes during the renovation. This is an important safety issue for the students as they navigate the school and grounds!

Lastly, I would like to encourage you to join the PTA if you have not already done so. It is NOT too late to join and support their mission!! The PTA is continuing to support Cherry Run students in THIS school year by supporting field trips, classroom activities, and other special events. We have a very active PTA and I encourage you to participate at whatever level you can.

Sincerely,
Mr. Bibbee

Although we are entering the final weeks of the school year, we still have many wonderful activities under way at Cherry Run.

This  week, we will recognize our wonderful teachers and staff members during Staff Appreciation Week. Please read on for details, or look for communications from your room parents. I would also like to extend many thanks to Kristin Kelso, Jackie Balough and our room parents for their hard work in making this week special.

On May 4, we will also begin our Silent Auction. There are many terrific items available for bid, and all proceeds support Cherry Run technology. Many thanks go to Kela Schuettler and Cindy Allen for leading this important effort!

Finally, on May 17, we will hold an evening PTA meeting from 7-8 pm at Burke Centre Library. This will be our last evening PTA meeting of the year, and we will elect the PTA Executive Board for the 2017-2018 school year. We hope to see you there!

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK

Staff Appreciation Week is May 1-5, 2017. The PTA is recognizing all the staff at CRES who make our school a great place for our kids to learn, grow, and feel safe and loved. Rooms Parents will be contacting their classroom families with their plans for each day of the week and how families can participate. On Friday, May 5th, The PTA will provide lunch catered by Café Rio for the entire staff.

We are committed to making all of our Cherry Run staff members feel especially appreciated during the week.  We have asked specific classrooms to "adopt" specials teachers and other resource teachers who don't have dedicated classes. However, there are several Itinerant teachers/specialists working with students at Cherry Run during the school year.  If your child works with an itinerant teacher/specialist on a regular basis, please take the time to honor that special person using one of the suggestions prepared by the PTA or in any way that's appropriate for your family.

Monday, May 1st - "Make Something Monday"
Students bring in a drawing, creation, or something else homemade (art or food) for your teacher and special CRES staff member

Tuesday, May 2nd - "Treat 'em Tuesday"
Students bring in a flower for their teacher or bring in their favorite treat (candy bar, Starbucks gift card, chips, favorite soda/tea, etc.) and special CRES staff member

Wednesday, May 3rd - "Wear It Wednesday"
Each student wears their teacher's favorite color or wears their class shirt (if your class has one)

Thursday, May 4th - "Thank You Thursday"
Each student writes a thank you note or card and gives it to their teacher and special CRES staff member

Friday, May 5th - "Feel Good Friday"
The PTA will provide lunch catered by Café Rio for the entire staff.  Room moms can choose to do something extra for teachers this day, but not expected since the luncheon is a gift for all.

CLASS PLACEMENT LETTER REPRINT

Cherry Run Parents and Students,

While it is only March of this school year, it is never too early to start thinking about next year and how we place your children in classes. This year, we are going to do things just as we did last year, it seems to have worked very well.  I am asking parents for feedback on how to place their children as far as classroom environment, friends, non-friends, and past experiences. Please note that I do not accept teacher requests of any kind. If you ask for a specific teacher your letter will be shred and it will not be considered during placement. If you sent a letter last year, please take the time to send another letter this year as those were shred after placements were completed.

If you would like to provide information about your child’s placement, please send me an email before May 15 (this is a FIRM deadline) that includes any (or all) of the following information

  • What type of learning environment suits your child best (“loose” or “tight” types of information). Some students need LOTS of structure and others crumble in that type of environment.
  • Several names of ‘friends’ that you would like to see placed with them.  We will do our best to make sure your child has at least one friend in class. (Note: if the teachers or the other parent request they not be placed together, we will not place them together). It has been a recent trend to only list one or two names and then become upset if you don’t get that friend in your child’s class. The more students you list, the better chance you have of a ‘friends’ placement. If you only list one or two names there is a strong chance that you will not get one.
  • Names of students that your child should be ‘separated’ from. This can even be a ‘friend’ that they get along too well with and find themselves in trouble.
  • If you have personally had a negative experience with a particular teacher that involves a sibling of the child going into that grade. Please be specific.

Please remember, having a great experience with a teacher for an older sibling does not mean that a similar experience is not possible with a different teacher for your younger student.  Your older child having a particular teacher does not mean the younger child will also have that teacher.

With the limited number of possible classroom placements, we will do our very best to place your child in accordance with the information you provide above.  Again, please do not list a teacher by name because I cannot accommodate all of the requests.  Since I cannot accommodate them all, I will not accommodate any.

All email requests are strictly confidential and will be for my eyes only.  Requests are shred after placements have been completed.  If you have any questions, please contact me at 703-923-2800.

Sincerely,
Mr. Bibbee
