On May 1, 2017 Counselors will be sending home a copy of the
course requests your son/daughter have selected for next year. We
anticipate there will be errors or a change in desired courses. Please
have your son/daughter contact their counselor by May 31 to make
any changes to next year’s requests. While August 29 (first day of
school) is a long way away, we need to have accurate numbers of students in
classes in order to make the master schedule. Also, the longer students
wait to change a request the less of a chance that course will have space
available. The next opportunity to change a course request will be August
15 when counselors return from summer vacation.
We believe it is important to call attention
to the recent Netflix Series, 13 Reasons Why, to our parents and guardians. This series
is based on the popular book by Jay Asher, and follows a group of students as
they piece together a story left behind by a classmate and friend who died by
suicide. While the series touches on important topics, it is critical for
children to process this information with a trusted adult if they have had the
opportunity to view this series. As is always the case, we encourage you
to talk with your children about what they are watching both at home or in the
company of friends. We also want to share with you these talking points (https://www.save.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/13RW-Talking-Points-Final_v5.pdf), which may be of
assistance as you engage in these conversations. Finally, we want to
remind parents of the language we use with students during our yearly wellness
lessons, taken directly from the organization Screening for Mental Health, Inc. When concerned
about a friend, we want all students to ACT. Acknowledge that they are seeing
warning signs and that it is serious, show they care by showing the
person your concern, and tell a trusted adult.
Your child’s counselor is available if you have additional questions or
concerns.
Are you moving out of the
Woodson area between now and August 29? Will you not be attending Woodson
next year? If so, please contact Sherri Perper, Registrar at 703-503-4622. We are here to assist you and to facilitate a
smooth transition for your student.
Each year our nation designates April as the Month of
the Military Child to recognize and thank children from military
families for the sacrifices they make living the military lifestyle. The
recognition is part of the legacy of former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger
who established the commemoration in 1986. During the month one day
is selected as the day to “Purple Up! For Military
Kids” and all are encouraged to wear purple in recognition of the
strength and sacrifices of military connected youth (MCY). Why
purple? Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military,
as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue,
Marine red, and Navy blue. This year PURPLE
UP day will be celebrated on April 21st.

Diego Milian is a very diligent worker. He comes in prepared and ready to work. He always had a happy demeanor and is an excellent example to other students.
Sophie Nemic has been a wonderful student! She has been responsible, helpful, encouraging and kind to her peers and to staff.
Nick Renzo is such a positive young man! He greets me with a big smile every morning and is pleasant and kind to staff and students alike.
Anthony Ravina has grown more self-confident as a student. He is more willing to participate in class discussions and share his thoughts. Anthony is also taking the initiative to help his peers catch up with missed work by explaining what the assignment was and what needs to be done. He has certainly come a long way!
