Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back from spring break!  Students and staff got off to a great start on Tuesday as we begin the final grading period of this school year!  I find it hard to believe that we are fast approaching the final weeks of school!

Yesterday morning we had a good turnout for the April PTA meeting.  In addition to PTA news, Alison Costanza, SBTS, shared our progress with FCPSOn, the technology initiative and Christine Healy, Social Worker, talked to parents about strategies to understand and manage student behaviors.  Both presentations were excellent and well-received by the community!

We are looking forward to honoring our office staff and health room aide during Secretaries’ Appreciation Week, April 24-28.   Mrs. Dall, Mrs. Li, Mrs. Bertrand, Mrs. Bippert, and Mrs. Schmitt work very hard managing our student records, assisting parents and the community, distributing paperwork, keeping students safe, and have countless other responsibilities yet they always welcome staff and visitors with their bright smiles.  Stacy Cappellari, our School Health Aide, is also instrumental in supporting our students with health issues or minor injuries.  Please join me in recognizing the office and clinic staff for all they do by stopping by to express your thanks or by sending in a note of appreciation.

Enjoy the upcoming weekend!

Sincerely,

Dr. Lori Cleveland, Principal

college

GBW's Annual College Day

GBW will join the Chantilly Pyramid in celebrating College Day” on Friday, April 21, 2017. GBW teachers and staff will proudly share their college experiences with their students. Our goal is to start the college conversation with our students and encourage them to keep an eye on the future. Our sixth graders will be visited by CHS seniors, who will talk about how they prepared themselves to be “college ready.”

Here are some reasons why FCPS supports “College Day.”

  • College graduates earn about $1,648 more each month, on average, than someone with a high school diploma.
  • The earlier a child learns about college, and believes they can go, the more likely it is that they’ll go.
  • Fairfax County Public Schools has programs to help students who are the first in their family to go to college, or need help affording college.

We aim to help our students create a vision for their future career paths!

"If I Could Have a Do-Over" - Mr. Halligan's Presentation

As part of the effort to help students understand the negative impact of bullying, Rocky Run and Franklin MS have invited Mr. John Halligan to conduct a presentation for their students. He will relay his own tragic experience as a dad whose 13-year-old son took his own life in 2003, after incessant bullying by peers since the 5th grade, both in school and online. His story is riveting and powerful, and reminds students that there is a face, a person, a heart, on the other end of the computer screen. Please visit his website at www.ryanpatrickhalligan.org for additional information.

Rocky Run will also have an evening presentation for all parents/guardians of Chantilly Pyramid schools on Monday, April 24th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM

District 12 Virginia Band and Orchestra Associations Solo Festival

This Friday and Saturday string and band students from all over our district, including many GBW string and band students, will be attending District 12 Virginia Band and Orchestra Associations Solo Festival at Langston Hughes Middle School. This optional performance allows students to receive feedback on their solo performance from a professional string or band adjudicator.  In addition to comments from their judge, students receive a score of I-V, where I is a rating of Superior.   We wish the best of luck to all GBW students performing in this festival!

Springfest

Springfest is Fairfax County’s official Earth Day/Arbor Day celebration, and this year it will be held at Sully Historic Site on Saturday, April 29 from 10 a.m. 4 p.m.  Admission is free.  Best of all, the event is both educational and fun.
