West Potomac Updates No. 27

Wolverine Community,

Please see below a few calendar reminders:

  • Friday, April 7th is the last day of the 3rd quarter and a 2 hour early release.  Please encourage your children to utilize our two late buses next week (Mon/Thurs) as needed to complete end of quarter responsibilities.
  • Monday, April 17 is a Teacher Workday, No School for Students.
  • Tuesday, April 4 is our College Admission Panel/Information Night for 11th graders and their Parents/Guardians at 630pm in Kogelman.  While 11th grade families are strongly encouraged to attend, all are welcome.

As we move into April, I hope to see many of you on campus.  Spring seasons are ramping up, and our Spring Musical, Billy Elliot, opening night is just around the corner.  Another great opportunity would be to join us Monday night at 630pm for the April PTSA Meeting.  In addition to a busy agenda, including a review of our school’s Fairfax County Youth Survey data, we will be reflecting on last weekend’s successful Bike-a-Thon which raised over $6,000 for the Wolverine Green.  Donations are still being accepted if you wish to support this important project!

Lastly, a quick reminder that your continued support and assistance with ensuring your child arrives on-time for school every day is greatly appreciated.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

Dale Rumberger

Interim Principal

Career Exploration Night, Wednesday, April 26, 6:30 pm

Support students on their road to career success! Participate in Career Exploration Night at West Potomac High School on Wednesday, April 26, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

WPHS is planning the 2nd annual Career Exploration Night for the entire study body, endeavoring to provide students an enriching experience by talking to experts in various fields. Our goal is to create a unique community experience by bringing together students with professionals from local businesses, the WPHS parent pool, staff contacts, and area residents. Most students have a dream where they see themselves in 10 years, with a fulfilling and successful career. Help students achieve those dreams!

You are a professional, an expert in your career field, and we need YOU to discuss your career, education, and training with high school students. Whether you are a lawyer or a plumber, an engineer or a politician, we need you to discuss your career one-on-one with our students. All professions welcome!

Click here to sign up and participate.

Career Exploration Night 2017

  • Wednesday, April 26
  • Location:  West Potomac HS Cafeteria
  • 6:00 pm set-up; event runs 6:30-8:00 pm
  • Each professional will be assigned a table. Students, individually or in small groups, would have a 5- to 10-minute discussion with the professional, then move on to other tables.
  • “Experts” are free to bring brochures/handouts and also business cards to exchange with the students.
  • Jobs, internships, or job shadowing opportunities provided by professionals are encouraged and greatly appreciated.

Last year, Career Exploration Night was an overwhelming success. We hope to attract even more professionals and students this year.

Healthy School Advocacy Training

On April 5, Real Food for Kids will hold Healthy School Advocacy Training, open to parents, teachers, administrators and engaged community members interested in elevating the culture of health in their schools. Click here for more information and to register.

Thanks to all of you who promoted our Culinary Challenge and Wellness Expo to your families. We had 325 attendees and a very successful program. Lake Braddock Secondary School took home the top prize in the challenge followed by Franklin Middle School and Chantilly Academy in 2nd and 3rd place. Sandburg MS, Glasgow MS, Irving MS and West Potomac HS all received recognitions for the Exhibition entries.

Student Services ISO Volunteers for Paw Prints

Our Student Services department has a special request for volunteers: As part of the Renaissance program, teachers need a healthy stock of Paw Prints (our school reward currency). A challenge has been to ensure we have enough paw prints copied and cut and ready for teachers to give to deserving students. We are looking for two volunteers on Friday mornings (maybe two hours or so) to ensure our “mint” is fully stocked by copying and cutting the Paw Prints for the week's awards. Morning hours (10-12) are ideal but we are flexible.

Please click here to add your name to the sign-up.

Wolverine Green Update

Digging in the Dirt for Earth Day – Saturday, April 22

With the Green that we raise from our Bike-A-Thon, we will be planting the first phase of the Virginia native habitat for the WG. It all begins with the trees: We will have a spectacular selection to grace our island, such as Brilliance, Serviceberry, Green Mountain, Sugar Maple, Heritage, River Birch, Oklahoma Redbud and many more. As the trees establish their roots, our teachers and students will bloom.

Mark your calendars for our first Earth Day celebration on Saturday April 22, from 9am to 2pm. We'll dig the holes for the trees, mulch, and generally spruce up the campus

As always, we appreciate any and all donations! We still have a lot to plant, nurture, water and cultivate. Every little bit helps, so please click here if you can make a donation today. Thank you!

Easiest Fundraisers Ever

Did you know that you can help the West Potomac PTSA earn money simply by shopping at your favorite grocery and online stores?  By taking a few minutes to register your accounts, the PTSA could earn hundreds of dollars to be used toward programs that benefit all of our kids. Here’s all the information you need:

  • Amazon Smile – Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the PTSA. Amazon Smile is the same as Amazon.  Same products, same prices, same service.  All you have to do it log into smile.amazon.com and designate West Potomac High PTSA as the group you would like to help and the school will start earning money.  Just remember to log into AmazonSmile when you shop, instead of Amazon.com.
  • Giant A+ - Just log onto www.Giant.com/aplus to designate West Potomac, ID #02263, using your Giant Card or call the A+ Hotline at 1-877-275-2758 for assistance. If you registered in the past, please verify that West Potomac is still your designated school.  Don’t forget to encourage your friends and family to register too.
  • Harris Teeter - The next time you shop at Harris Teeter, give the cashier the West Potomac PTSA Account number 3602 and your VIC card will start earning money for the school.  The PTSA will receive 5% of the purchase price of Harris Teeter brand prodcuts.

If you have any questions about these programs, please contact Monica Mulvihill at monijeff@cox.net.
