 Woodson fans are the best!
Thank you to Mr. Mashinski and the security team, including
Officer Randazzo for discussing with parents the current trends in youth
today. Two items came up in the discussion that parents asked us to
share with the community. Since spring is here, this is a good time to
discuss the harm of drug use, including prescription drug abuse. The
question arose if parents can search their child’s room – the answer is yes, it
is your house and your prerogative to search. Do you have prescription
drugs in the home that have not been used? If so, there is a prescription
take back on 4/29, location to be determined so please check the websites below
for more information after 4/1. Reminder that FCPS will offer
a Youth Survey Night for the WTW Pyramid on May 10 at 7PM in Café A. WTW
Student Services will host Social Media Night on 5/15 at 7PM in Cafeteria A to
share the most current apps and how kids are using them and how to monitor
them. Hope to see you there.

The National Prescription Drug
Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of
disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about
the potential for abuse and medications.

The Woodson PTSO would like to invite parents and students
(recommended for ages 10 and up) to our presentation of the documentary,
Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age
Wednesday, April 5, 2017 7pm Woodson Auditorium
Screenagers is a documentary about one of the biggest parenting issues
of our time. Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their
rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span?
Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights
from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech
time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower
their kids to best navigate the digital world to find balance.
Screenagers addresses this pervasive parenting issue head on — depicting
teen struggles over social media, video games and internet addiction.

Last weekend our choral students participated in the Virginia Music Educators Association's annual assessments. The event was hosted at Woodson with 38
choirs from 8 different high schools participated in our district. Under the direction of Michael Ehrlich and Amy Moir, five of our choirs received Superior ratings and the sixth received an Excellent rating. We are very proud of our choral students and their instructors.
Students enrolled in courses where there
is an end-of-course test will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests online from May 22
- June 5. It will be very helpful if you can avoid appointments
which may take your child out of school during this time period. The Virginia Department of
Education (VDOE) requires all students across the state to take the SOL Tests if they are enrolled in
courses where there is an end-of-course test.
As a precautionary
measure, FCPS has begun testing for lead in water across the district.
Our school was recently tested and I’m pleased to report that our test results
came back well within the safe limits set by the EPA and no additional testing
is planned.
Abby Gill was
out sick for several days and worked really hard to get caught up.
There are a couple students that excelled working on a class
project on political participation in government. Mallory Branley and Gurpreet
Marwah created a survey for students about online textbooks and Zachary
Buchanan contacted a couple officials about improving school lunches.
Eddie Chong has
really improved in my class over the past several weeks.
Vanessa Diaz has
really stepped it up this quarter in World History. She is having a
great deal of success on her unit tests and all of her assignments
being completed at a high level. All of her hard work is paying
off.
