Calendar Reminder: Students to Be Dismissed Two Hours Early on April 7; Spring Break Is April 10-14, April 17 Is a Student Holiday

Students will be released two hours early on Friday, April 7, the last day of the third quarter. Spring break will be held Monday, April 10 through Friday, April 14. Monday, April 17, is a teacher workday and a holiday for students. Classes will resume on Tuesday, April 18. See the 2016-17 school year calendar.

2017-18 School Year Calendar

As you start making plans for this summer and the 2017-18 school year, be sure to note that the first day of school will be Monday, August 28. See the 2017-18 school year calendar.


2017 Special Education Conference to Be Held on April 1 at Hayfield Secondary School

Fairfax County Public Schools will hold its twelfth annual Special Education Conference on Saturday, April 1, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hayfield Secondary School

The conference, designed for parents and educators of students who receive special education services or who have learning challenges or special needs, will feature Nancy Mather, Ph.D., professor of special education at the University of Arizona, as the keynote speaker. Mather will discuss “Elephant in the Room: What We Overlook Regarding Struggling Readers,” that will address issues affecting the identification of students who struggle with reading and appropriate interventions. 

Breakout sessions include topics such as Dyslexia: Identification and Overview; Everyday Tools for Improving Executive Functions; and Teaching Independence in the Home for Students with Autism.

STEM Camp


April 17 Is Deadline to Receive Discounted Tuition for Select 2017 FCPS Summer Enrichment Camps

“Early Bird” registration for Institute for the Arts (IFTA), Elementary Institute for the Arts (E-IFTA), Tech Adventure Camp, and STEM Camp ends on Monday, April 17. Transportation from select schools outside of the Lake Braddock pyramid is included in the tuition for all four camps. Students should register for programs based on the grade they are in during the current (2016-17) school year.

FCPS Art Students Earn 29 Medals in 2017 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

Fairfax County Public Schools students earned 29 national medals in visual arts in the 2017 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program. The program is presented by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, and is the largest, longest-running recognition program of its kind in the United States.

South County High School Assistant Principal Michael Pflugrath Is a Finalist for National Assistant Principal of the Year

South County High School assistant principal Michael Pflugrath is one of three finalists for the NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals) National Assistant Principal of the Year award. Pflugrath is praised for helping individuals reach their full potential by closing the achievement gap through a focus on student-centered learning and student engagement.

Matthew Beebe


In the Spotlight: Matthew Beebe, Teacher at Lorton Station Elementary

Matthew Beebe’s experience as a teacher at Lorton Station Elementary has made him profoundly grateful for his life so far, and has helped shape him into an empathetic and creative educator who routinely goes above and beyond for his students.

Beebe started at Lorton Station in August 2014 as a special education teacher after graduating from SUNY-Fredonia. He quickly realized that the challenges many of his students faced on a daily basis overshadowed any challenge he had ever experienced.

2017 Graduation Schedule

2017 Graduation Schedule Available

The 2017 FCPS high school graduation schedule, including dates, times, and locations, is now available online.


2017-18 Kindergarten Registration

Will your child turn five years old by September 30? If so, contact your child’s school to make arrangements for kindergarten enrollment. Most schools begin getting information together in late March or early April for parents of incoming kindergartners, and many host an orientation or open house. All kindergarten programs are full-day and located in FCPS elementary schools.

Check your school’s webpage or contact the school directly for specific enrollment information and dates of orientation that typically occur between mid-March and the end of June.

Next Teen Job Fair Set for April 1 at West Springfield High School

Fairfax County high school students looking for their first part-time job, summer and seasonal job opportunities, or who want more information about potential career pathways are invited to attend one of two remaining teen job fairs in Fairfax County. Local businesses and agencies will be on hand to offer a range of opportunities including part-time employment, internships, and volunteer work for prospective students. Free booth spaces are provided to local businesses. The next teen job fair will be held on Saturday, April 1, at West Springfield High School.
