West Potomac Update No.26

West Potomac Community,

What a week we had!  I knew a great week was ahead of us when it started with the wonderful news regarding the Wolverine performances at the Regional Science and Engineering Fair.  Please take a look below my letter with a summary of all the successes from last weekend’s event.  I thoroughly enjoyed the Winter Sports Banquet on Tuesday evening where we honored all our winter student athletes.  Particular congratulations goes to Matt Frame and Haleigh Hopper who were awarded the Male and Female Winter Scholar Athlete of Year.  The pyramid art show was another great success this year.  Beautiful works of art to include our feeder schools was on display in our Springbank building.  West Potomac is a strong community and this is just one of the many wonderful ways we collaborate within the largest pyramid in Fairfax County.  March Madness fever was active on campus as our Band Concert, entitled March Madness, was a resounding success.

I want to congratulate Mr. Kerr and his Combatting Intolerance class which was honored recently as the recipient of the 2017 West Potomac Fairfax County Peace Award.  There is so much great work going on at West Potomac and the efforts of these student to educate and support our school community is just another example of it.  A well-deserved recognition!

As we close today, while we hope all students enjoyed an extra day of rest, our faculty was working hard, engaging in a variety of professional development meetings.  Wolverine Educators are ready to end the last two weeks of the 3rd quarter with high quality instruction.  I know our students will return on Monday ready to give their best efforts as the end of the quarter, April 7, quickly approaches.

Wishing you a restful and relaxing weekend.

Dale Rumberger

Interim Principal

Student Services ISO Volunteers for Paw Prints

Our Student Services department has a special request for volunteers: As part of the Renaissance program, teachers need a healthy stock of Paw Prints (our school reward currency). A challenge has been to ensure we have enough paw prints copied and cut and ready for teachers to give to deserving students. We are looking for two volunteers on Friday mornings (maybe two hours or so) to ensure our “mint” is fully stocked by copying and cutting the Paw Prints for the week's awards. Morning hours (10-12) are ideal but we are flexible.

Digging in the Dirt for Earth Day – Saturday, April 22

With the Green that we raise from our Bike-A-Thon, we will be planting the first phase of the Virginia native habitat for the WG. It all begins with the trees: We will have a spectacular selection to grace our island, such as Brilliance, Serviceberry, Green Mountain, Sugar Maple, Heritage, River Birch, Oklahoma Redbud and many more. As the trees establish their roots, our teachers and students will bloom.

Mark your calendars for our first Earth Day celebration on Saturday April 22, from 9am to 2pm.
We'll dig the holes for the trees, mulch, and generally spruce up the campus

As always, we appreciate any and all donations! We still have a lot to plant, nurture, water and cultivate. Every little bit helps, so please click here if you can make a donation today. Thank you!
