Seventy-Seven Students Named to
2017 All-Virginia Middle School Honors Choir
Seventy-seven Fairfax County Public Schools students from 13 middle
schools have been selected to perform as part of the 2017 All-Virginia Middle
School Honors Choir. The FCPS students are among 317 accepted into either the
treble or mixed choir. More than 1,100 students auditioned for the groups, sponsored
by the Virginia chapter of the American Choral Directors Association.
The All-Virginia Middle School Honors Choir will perform April 27-29,
concurrent with the Virginia Music Educators Association All-Virginia Chorus in
Blacksburg.

Calendar Reminder: March 24 Is a Student
Holiday
All FCPS
schools will be closed for students on Friday, March 24, for a staff
development day. Classes will resume on Monday, March 27. See the 2016-17

Resource—Student Wellness: Tips and Strategies
From school and sports to social life and social media, many
students have a lot to manage. And sometimes, unexpected stressors suddenly
appear, adding more weight to already full shoulders. To help, a new webpage
for students with easy-to-digest mental health and wellness information—titled
Student Wellness: Tips and Strategies—is now live. The page includes
information on topics such as: How to Handle Peer Pressure; How to Help a
Friend in Crisis; Eight Easy Ways to Bring Balance into Your Life; as well as
who to contact in the event of a mental health emergency.

New
Admission Test for TJHSST to Be Introduced During 2017-18 School Year
Fairfax County Public Schools will introduce a new admission test for
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) during the
2017-18 school year. TJHSST, a regional governor’s school, has a
competitive admissions process for each new freshman class.
The new test is necessary because the current provider of the test,
Pearson Education, withdrew its support for the TJHSST admissions testing
program as a business decision.

and Engineering Fair
Eleven Fairfax County Public Schools students earned
grand prize awards at the 62nd annual Fairfax County Regional Science and
Engineering Fair held March 17-19 at Robinson Secondary School.

Next Teen Job Fair Set for April 1 at West
Springfield High School
Fairfax
County high school students looking for their first part-time job, summer and seasonal
job opportunities, or who want more information about potential career pathways
are invited to attend one of two remaining teen job fairs in Fairfax
County. Local businesses and agencies will be on hand to offer a range of
opportunities including part-time employment, internships, and volunteer work
for prospective students. Free booth spaces are provided to local businesses. The
next teen job fair will be held on Saturday, April 1, at West Springfield High
School.

In the Spotlight: Margaret McDonald, Art Teacher at Herndon Elementary
Students who are lucky enough to be in Margaret McDonald’s
art classes at Herndon Elementary experience the wonder and delight of being
truly creative with their artwork, something McDonald practices in her own art,
which includes thrown pottery, mosaics, and painting.
Now in her eleventh year as an art teacher, McDonald brings
a positive energy to her students and the philosophy that every child has the
urge to impact the world and the ability to create.

care. All FCPS Cares submissions were reviewed and six winners were
selected for the month of February—one for each region and the central
office—to receive extra recognition for their work. They are:
