All members of our extended Oakton community are invited to stop by, say hello, and share memories with Dr. Banbury. Please feel free to share this evite with anyone who would like to attend.
Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP by 4/1/17.
Thank you and we look forward to sharing this festive evening with you!
*Please note, this reception will take the place of our PTSA meeting previously scheduled for this time.

Feedback for School Website

We are going to be upgrading our school website this Spring. As we prepare for this big change, we are looking for your feedback on how we can make the site better for your needs. Please take a few minutes to provide input on Oakton's website. Your input will impact the new layout of our website.
The feedback form can be found here.
If you would like to see what the new website will look like, please visit the websites of Westfield High School or West Potomac High School, who have already upgraded to the new format.

Parent Volunteers for Baccalaureate 2017

We are looking for parent volunteers to help organize the Baccalaureate 2017, a very special event which will be held the evening of June 14. The "BACC" is a non-denominational event in which senior-year students have a chance to reflect on the milestones they have achieved and look ahead to the possibilities before them. The hour-long event will include inspirational talks from students and leaders from the community as well as musical performances from our talented Oakton seniors. If interested, please contact Lisa Curtis at clhmcurtis@msn.com.

AP Proctoring – parent volunteers needed!

We are looking for parent volunteers to help with AP test proctoring! Oakton High School students will take over 3400 AP exams over two weeks in May, and parent support will help administer them smoothly. AP Exams are the weeks of May 1 and May 8.

If you are able to give your time, we ask that you sign up online. You may proctor any exam as long as your child is not taking that exam and you are not a teacher or professor in that subject. We also ask all volunteers to attend an information session at Oakton on April 28 at 8:30 am.

Email Alyson Calvello (acalvello@fcps.edu) and Martha Rodeheaver (myrodeheaver@fcps.edu) with any questions. Thank you for your help!

Temporary Hold on Pantry Donations

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, our Pantry is not only stocked, it is overflowing. From now until Spring Break we are going to temporarily hold off on accepting any more donations until we can use the supplies that we have. Large boxes of food and other items will be going home with families in need for the week-long break. Thank you so much!

Produce and Volunteers Needed for Spring Break Food Boxes

In preparation for Spring Break, The Pantry team is planning to provide large boxes of food for students (and their families) in need. We are in need of donors willing to contribute produce and bread, and volunteers to help pack up the boxes. Since we do not have access to a refrigerator, we can only accept produce on THURSDAY, APRIL 6, which is the same day that we will be packing the boxes and the families will be picking them up. If you can help, please sign up here.

Science Fair Results

Oakton had 22 projects (21 individual and one team) represented at the Regional Science Fair and each project received at least an Honorable Mention.  Students invested a lot of time and effort in their research, project design, implementation, data collection, analysis, conclusions, and preparation for their presentations before numerous Category and Organizational judges.  Many of these judges were physicists, environmentalists, doctors, chemists, computer scientists… and students got to present to the specialists in their fields.  Science fair is a beautiful blend of project based learning with the essential skills of a portrait of a graduate.  Though rigorous, it is profoundly rewarding and the skills they develop through the process can be applied to all disciplines and life- long learning.  We are developing a culture of “repeat” science fair students -- those who continue to do it year after year even when it isn’t required because of their passion for experimentation and learning.

Congratulations to the students listed! We are so proud of you!

Sports Physicals

To participate in sports next school year, your child must have a physical on file dated on or after May 1, 2017, on the new form (Revised April 2016). This includes working out in the weight room, conditioning, “green days” and try outs.
The Oakton High School Athletic Training Program is offering an opportunity for students to receive a sports health screening and pre-participation physical (PPE) on Monday May 15, 2017 from 5:30-8 pm. Our team physicians, as well as a staff of nurses, physical therapists and certified athletic trainers will be on hand to provide a thorough screening. If during the screening or physical, the physicians find something that is questionable to them regarding your child’s health, they may request further evaluation by another physician. We are asking for a minimum donation of $50 in exchange for the PPE. Registration is not open yet, however, to register for a PPE, go to: www.oaktonathletics.org and follow the links for sports physicals. There is also a link for the new form there as well. Walk-ins are also welcome on that evening but we ask for a $60 donation at that time. This physical is good for the entire following school year.
This is the Athletic Training Program’s method of fund raising. All the funds for equipment and supplies are raised at this event. The county provides no funding for any of the supplies or equipment in the athletic training room that is used to take care of our athletes. Your support would be greatly appreciated. You too benefit from this process. Once your child’s VHSL physical form is completed that night, it stays on file at the school, as well as a digital copy is kept on our server, so if you need a copy just email one of the ATCs and we can sent you a copy.
PPE’s are being offered in the same format at every high school in FCPS and are fund raising efforts at those schools as well. If you cannot attend the PPEs at Oakton H.S., there may be another local high school offering the opportunity on a date that may be more convenient for you. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Paul Rupp, MS, ATC at prupp@fcps.edu.
