Welcome
to another edition of Hornet Highlights! Throughout my travels each week, I
always seem to find some great things going on both in and around Herndon High
School. Here’s a look at what has been happening in classes, in competition,
and in the lives of our students and staff over the last week. I hope you
enjoy!
Sincerely,
Liz Noto
Welcome Lucas Samuel Valvede! ESOL teacher, Mrs.
Ruth Valverde, delivered this handsome little boy on Sunday, February 26th.
During Mrs. Valverde’s absence, Jacqueline Morgan is taking the reins. We are
so happy to welcome this newest little Hornet.
Estelle Kim (Grade 10) won 2nd place in
the visual arts category in the Fairfax County PTA Reflections contest. This
year’s theme was “What is your Story?” In her
required essay about her painting, Estelle wrote of the introverted
and extroverted sides within each of us that play a part in who we are.
Did you know Herndon High School
leads all high schools in Fairfax County Public Schools for the percentage of
waste that we recycle? Our hat is off to Mr. Mike Myer (teacher sponsor) and his
dedicated students their commitment to our school and environment.
Our Herndon robotics team, Team Epsilon Delta, traveled
to Battlefield High School for this season’s first competition. Taking
advantage of the delayed start, the team was fine-tuning their robot in this
photo. We are so proud of this team, their volunteers, and their staff sponsors
for the enormous amount of time and effort they have dedicated to prepare for
competition!
Congratulations to Coach Josh Headen and our Hornet
Boys Basketball team for their impressive season, which came to a close on
Friday last week. Our boys made it all the way to the state tournament, which
was a remarkable feat! In this photo, senior Michael Griffin makes a shot
behind the three-point line. Great work, Team!
Here it is! The final donation inventory from
last week’s food collection sponsored by our NJROTC students. After walking
through some of our neighborhoods to drop off collection bags for food
donations, these cadets walked through again to collect contributions. They
even let me pose in this week’s photo. Thank you to our NJROTC program!
This year’s Students v. Teachers Gatorball
Tournament was thoroughly entertaining. The winning student team, “Jordan’s
Nandoodz”, annihilated our staff. We’re just thankful we use the nerf balls
these days. Thank you to our student and staff participants, our Leadership
Class for organizing the event, and the fans who came to cheer on their favorite
teams!
Hodan Hanfi (Grade 11), Kirsten Ellis (Grade 12),
Hana Nur (Grade 12), Zainab Camara (Grade 10), and Isatu Fofanah (Grade 11) are
seen here posing for a photo during a meeting last week for our new girls’
leadership group. These ladies spent their Stinger Time learning about building
confidence, increasing self-esteem, dispelling stereotypes, and developing
their leadership skills.
Hornet Junior, Carly Shaffer accepted her nomination to
represent Herndon High School at Girls State in June at Longwood
University. Girls State is designed to teach young women responsible
citizenship and provide an opportunity to learn firsthand how our state and
local governments work. Carly plans to study political science in the future,
so this opportunity is perfect for her.
