Produce for Pantry

On Fridays, 25 students-in-need take home backpacks full of food for the weekend. We would like to begin adding fresh produce to the backpacks. Since The Pantry does not have a refrigerator, we can accept produce on Friday mornings only. We have set up a schedule for donors so that we don't collect more produce than we can use.
Produce should be brought to the front office no later than 8:30 AM on Friday mornings only. Please click here to sign up.

If you need to participate in the backpack program, please contact your counselor.

Sully District Town Hall to discuss the Fairfax County FY 2018 Budget – March 8, 7-9 pm

Please join Supervisor Kathy Smith, School Board Representative Tom Wilson, County Executive Ed Long, The Sully District Council, and Budget Staff from Fairfax County and FCPS to discuss the FY 2018 budgets. More information here.

Congratulations to the girls basketball team on qualifying for the state championship game at the VCU Siegel Center on Saturday, March 11th at 6:45 pm! We hope to have a fan bus for students and members of the community. (It is first come/first served. If we do not have enough signed up by noon on Wednesday we will not be able to get the bus and will refund money.) The price is $35. The cost includes the bus ride and the $10 ticket into the game. The bus will leave Oakton at 3:30. Meet in the gym lobby at 3:00. The bus will leave Richmond about 30 minutes after the game is over – approximately 9:00, and it should be back at Oakton by 11:00.

To sign up to go, please fill out the two-page permission packet and bring $35 cash or check to Oakton HS and bring to the Activities Office by Wednesday at noon. See below on how to purchase tickets independently if you are driving on your own.
THE BUS WILL NOT BE STOPPING FOR FOOD. STUDENTS SHOULD BRING LUNCH/SNACKS FOR THE BUS AND MONEY TO PURCHASE FOOD AT THE SIEGEL CENTER.
If a student does not show up for the bus Saturday afternoon, we will NOT be calling parents to let them know. Parents will not be notified that their student did not show up for the bus. Money will not be refunded.
PURCHASING TICKETS if NOT riding the bus:
People who are driving themselves may purchase tickets ($10 each) in advance on-line. (Keep in mind that tickets have sold out in the past so you may not want to wait till you get to VCU.) The Siegel Center ticket office is (804) 828-7267. On-site sales are cash only. However, credit cards may be used to purchase tickets in advance on-line or by phone for pick up at Will-Call (west end of building). Children six years or younger are admitted free if accompanied by an adult. No seats are reserved. The ticket office is located on the West end of the Siegel Center.

Oakton DECA Dominates at SLC

Oakton DECA had 100 students compete against 3,000 other students at the Virginia DECA State Leadership Conference this past weekend. We had 29 students receive special recognition and 56 students qualified to compete at the International Career Development Conference this April in Anaheim, CA! This was a record breaking year for Oakton DECA and we are so proud of our students!

Parent Education Night - Chasing the Dragon – March 13

Oakton High School will be presenting Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict, a documentary video about the growing problem of opioid addiction, at 7:00 pm on Monday, March 13. In this documentary, a number of young individuals (many from Northern Virginia) who have struggled with drug addiction tell their personal stories, in their own voices, and at times using potentially offensive language.  More information on the video is available on the FBI website.

We hope parents can join the Oakton administration and county police for the video and a discussion after the viewing. Students who are accompanied by their parents are also welcome to attend.

Parent Education Workshop: Developing Leadership Skills

Colleges place a strong emphasis on demonstrated leadership skills. Employers consistently rank leadership as one of the top 10 must have skills, even for entry level positions. In this presentation we will explore ways to foster leadership skills in teens.
- What are the key attributes of a leader?
- What are exactly the leadership skills?
- Are leaders born or made?
- How does leadership now predict future success?
- Practical steps in developing leadership skills

World Kidney Day Fundraiser

The National Kidney Foundation is hosting a Chipotle fundraiser on March 9, World Kidney Day. On this day, 50% of the proceeds will be donated to the National Kidney Foundation. Please mention the National Kidney Foundation when ordering at any Virginia Chipotle on Thursday, March 9, between 10:45 am and 10:00 pm. Thank you for your support!

Sports Physicals

To participate in sports next school year, your child must have a physical on file dated on or after May 1, 2017, on the new form (Revised April 2016). This includes working out in the weight room, conditioning, “green days” and try outs.
The Oakton High School Athletic Training Program is offering an opportunity for students to receive a sports health screening and pre-participation physical (PPE) on Monday May 15, 2017 from 5:30-8 pm. Our team physicians, as well as a staff of nurses, physical therapists and certified athletic trainers will be on hand to provide a thorough screening. If during the screening or physical, the physicians find something that is questionable to them regarding your child’s health, they may request further evaluation by another physician. We are asking for a minimum donation of $50 in exchange for the PPE. Registration is not open yet, however, to register for a PPE, go to: www.oaktonathletics.org and follow the links for sports physicals. There is also a link for the new form there as well. Walk-ins are also welcome on that evening but we ask for a $60 donation at that time. This physical is good for the entire following school year.
This is the Athletic Training Program’s method of fund raising. All the funds for equipment and supplies are raised at this event. The county provides no funding for any of the supplies or equipment in the athletic training room that is used to take care of our athletes. Your support would be greatly appreciated. You too benefit from this process. Once your child’s VHSL physical form is completed that night, it stays on file at the school, as well as a digital copy is kept on our server, so if you need a copy just email one of the ATCs and we can sent you a copy.
PPE’s are being offered in the same format at every high school in FCPS and are fund raising efforts at those schools as well. If you cannot attend the PPEs at Oakton H.S., there may be another local high school offering the opportunity on a date that may be more convenient for you. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Paul Rupp, MS, ATC at prupp@fcps.edu.
