Saturday night in the suburbs

SATURDAY NIGHT IN THE SUBURBS

Wednesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. at South Lakes High School
and
Thursday, March 16 at 7 p.m. at Westfield High School

Parents and adults in the community are invited to attend one of two upcoming Saturday Night in the Suburbs programs in March.

This adults-only UPC parent awareness program features an evening of dialogue with a panel of high school seniors on drugs and alcohol use, teen parties, and healthy teen-parent communication. Middle school and high school parents can benefit from this program.

"Parents find this to be somewhat eye-opening," said UPC's Jennifer Lewis-Cooper, who will facilitate the events. "We will not ask the panel specific names, dates, places of events or put them on the spot -- their job is not to 'snitch' on others but to educate parents to understand what teens are dealing with and help parents to set better limits and increase resiliency."

Mark your calendars now to attend these events hosted by each school's PTSA:

  • Wednesday, March 8 at 7 p.m., at South Lakes High School (Lecture Hall), 11400 South Lakes Drive, Reston
  • Thursday, March 16 at 7 p.m. at Westfield High School (Lecture Study), 4700 Stonecroft Blvd., Chantilly

Share the South Lakes event flier and the Westfield event flier.

Herndon High School welcomes The Kennedy Center as it presents

From the Mouths of Monsters

A World Premiere Kennedy Center Commission by Idris Goodwin
Directed by Douglas Irvine, Inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic book Frankenstein

Teenager Michelle struggles to find the confidence to speak.  A mysterious doctor gives her a mask to help, but the gift possesses supernatural powers that cause her to give words amazing power—and also the potential to cause terrible harm.  Will Michelle be able to master the monster within?

This highly theatrical work is inspired by Mary Shelley’s enduring classic Frankenstein, which celebrates 200 years in 2018.  For the book’s upcoming special anniversary, award-winning playwright and BreakBeat poet Idris Goodwin, along with acclaimed director Douglas Irvine (the Kennedy Center’s presentations of Jason and the Argonauts and The Adventures of Robin Hood), have created a fiercely relevant two-actor play that examines the monstrous power of words… and those who wield them.
