In the Spotlight: Pete Cookson, Sixth Grade Teacher at Kings Glen Elementary
School
If it seems like the students in Pete Cookson’s class at Kings Glen
Elementary School are in constant motion throughout the school day, it’s
because they are. Cookson, who teaches sixth grade, ensures that his
students enjoy the learning process by including creativity and collaboration
with the opportunity to get up, move around, and explore all day.
His classroom is an eclectic mix of tables and chairs, including a
two-seat, fast-food style table to swivel chairs and picnic benches, offering
students lots of options for learning. Visitors see giant stuffed animals—ready
to be used as part of a scale model of the galaxy—or piles of cardboard
boxes—to build robots for math review sessions and Mars landers—or yarn and
string zigzagged around the room in a labyrinth (think Minotaur).

Cool Schools: Jackson Middle School Art Students Create
Adaptive Lessons for Students With Intellectual Disabilities
At Jackson Middle, students in Janet Lundeen’s art extensions class
create and implement adaptive art lessons for students with intellectual
disabilities (ID). The art extensions students interviewed special
education teacher Andrea Mayer to determine the skill levels of the ID students
and to learn which skills could use more practice. The art extensions
students then created and implemented lessons based on the needs of the students
and input from Lundeen. The ID students work with their art extensions
buddy to complete various art projects. This month, the students are
creating giant flowers that will be displayed in a cardboard vase.
