We
are thrilled to announce that we’ve begun the second phase of The Pantry at
Oakton – our Backpack Program. Every Friday, students in need may bring
home a backpack filled with food for themselves and their siblings. They
return the backpack on Monday and it will be refilled and available every
Friday. Please contact your child’s counselor if your child is in need of
the Backpack program.
Thank
you to the continued support of our community to keep The Pantry fully
stocked. Currently we are in need of the following items: boxed milk,
canned tuna, canned chicken and juice.
New Visitor Management System
Oakton High School is using a
new Visitor Management System for parents, visitors, volunteers and substitutes
to check in when they come to the school. The new system was provided by
FCPS to improve school security. All adults coming to in the building
will now be required to scan their ID (driver’s license, state issued ID card,
passport, ect) when they check-in which will be checked against the national
sex offenders registries to ensure the safety of our students. If you do
not have an ID please let the office staff know and they will assist you with
checking in.
AP Exams –
Non-Enrolled Students – Deadline March 1
If any student wants to
take an AP exam in a course that he/she is not enrolled in, registration is now
open. Each exam costs $100, and the form to register can be found in school
counseling or on our website.
Students currently enrolled in an AP course are automatically registered for
the corresponding AP exam and do not need to complete any form.
If you have any questions about AP testing in general,
please contact one of our AP testing coordinators: Martha Rodeheaver at myrodeheaver@fcps.edu
or Alyson Calvello at acalvello@fcps.edu.

Cougar Time to prepare and learn more about what it takes to get to college.
All students are welcome to attend these monthly meetings, however, in order to
receive additional benefits of the College Partnership Program, such as
academic counseling, college visit field trips and summer experiences, assistance
with completing college applications, workshops, test prep, fee waivers for SAT
and ACT, as well as college applications and parent info programs; students
should apply to become an official CPP member.
Visit the FCPS
website to learn more about the program’s philosophy and
principles, as well as eligibility. Students may apply online or through a
paper application by March 31st. Applications are available online. Paper applications (and a

NoVa Teen Book Festival 2017
This year’s NoVa TEEN Book
Festival will take place Saturday, March 11 from 9:30 – 6:00 at Washington Lee
High School in Arlington. NoVa TEEN Book Festival, in its 4th year, is a FREE
festival celebrating Young Adult fiction. It’s a day-long event packed with
books, authors, and activities in Arlington, Virginia. It’s the first event of
its kind in the Arlington and Washington DC-metro area. Book lovers of all ages
are welcome!
Library Overdue Books & Fines
If you have an overdue book or a
library fine, you should receive a NOTICE during English class this week
explaining the details of the obligation.
There are two types of library obligations: “library bills” and “overdue
notices.”
If your paper says “Library Bill,” look at the column that says “Reason” for
one of the following:
- “Overdue” - means the book was returned already, but it was late and has a fine
for the amount listed.
- “Lost” - means the book was not returned and has been marked lost because it
has been gone for so long; the student needs to pay the amount listed for the
price of the book or return the book and pay the overdue fine. (Books that have
been out for many months have usually accrued a fine of $10.)
- “Misc” - typically, this refers to a printing fee that was not paid; the
student owes the amount listed.
If your paper says “Overdue Notice” or “Long Overdue Notice,” the book is a
checkout from this year that has not been returned. The book needs to be
returned and will be assessed a late fine at that time. (10¢ per day it is late
– many months overdue will be around $10.) If the book is lost, the student
will owe the amount listed as “price” on this notice.
You should also receive an email in your school Google email by Friday,
February 24, indicating that you have an obligation (without details). Students with questions should stop by the library to get clarification!
Parent Education Night - Chasing
the Dragon – March 13
Oakton High School will be
presenting Chasing the Dragon: The Life
of an Opiate Addict, a documentary video about the growing problem of
opioid addiction, at 7:00 pm on Monday, March 13. In this documentary, a number
of young individuals (many from Northern Virginia) who have struggled with drug
addiction tell their personal stories, in their own voices, and at times using
potentially offensive language. More
information on the video is available on the FBI
website.
We hope parents can join the
Oakton administration and county police for the video and a discussion after
the viewing. Students who are accompanied by their parents are also welcome to
attend.
