Churchill Chatter - Issue 21, February 8, 2017
Churchill Road SCA officers, students and staff members helped out at the Langley Pyramid's recent Stop Hunger Now event.
PBIS: Caring
Each quarter, Churchill Road students focus on developing behaviors characteristic of a specific PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) character trait: Responsibility (Q1), Caring (Q2), Collaboration (Q3) and Perseverance (Q4). During the second quarter, Churchill Road students of all ages were encouraged to show caring through building personal relationships with classmates and other students, and were given opportunities to reach out to the greater community through acts of service. Acts of service included kindergarten students decorating and assembling gift bags for kindergarten students at our buddy school, Dogwood Elementary; donating and helping with Stop Hunger Now, and Mrs. Finger’s trip to Haiti. These service opportunities encourage students to become responsible and caring global citizens.
Throughout the school year, caring is an integral part of our school community. Students begin their day with morning meeting, setting the tone for a respectful, caring classroom community in which every student is valued and important. Students follow the 4 R’s of PBIS to foster caring, as they work to respect themselves, other people, property and the Earth. Many classes participate in the green bracelet program, where students award their peers with a special green bracelet when caring behavior is exhibited. Student leaders show caring as they serve in vital roles such as safety patrol, eco-team and SCA. Many upper grade classes have lower grade buddy classes, giving these classes the opportunity to show caring and encouragement to other kids with whom they may not otherwise interact.
Modeling caring behavior is a great way to reinforce this character trait with your own children. Give them many opportunities to show caring to others, and lead your children in open discussions about the intrinsic value of these caring acts.
CRS Kids' Lit Quiz team members placed second at the National competition.
CRS Takes Second Place at the National Kids' Literature Quiz
Competition
On February 1 and 2, CRS competed against 90 schools at the National Kids' Literature Quiz (KLQ) competition at Central Connecticut State University. Called the 'sport of reading', our eight CRS students correctly answered questions on a range of literature topics, including Natalie Babbitt, Harry Potter, ancient mythology, and Shel Silverstein.
Congratulations to Ella R., Elliott L., Conner T., and Abigail L. for placing second in the nationals, and to Kyra M., Isabella C., Anthony X., and Yantang L. for placing eleventh in their heat. Both teams competed against a field dominated by middle schools and showed maturity and strong sportsmanship, as well as, an astonishing degree of breadth and depth in their reading. Well done, students!
Mc. McLendon's students were among the many classes that created cards as part of the VA's Valentines for Veterans initiative.
Wellness: Being Kind to Others
When we think of health, we usually think about exercise and diet, but there are other dimensions of health that influence our overall wellbeing beyond physical activities and nutrition. Intellectual stimulation, sense of community, emotional wellbeing, and environment all contribute to our health. Next week, February 12-18, is Random Acts of Kindness Week, and presents the perfect inspiration to improve many aspects of our health. Challenge your intellect by getting creative on ways to be kind to others: write a short gratitude poem, read about inspiring acts of kindness, or design a thoughtful card recognizing a friend’s good deed. Using your mind to observe others through a lense of kindness and inventing unique ways to acknowledge their kindness will not only hone your mental acuity, but will also strengthen your sense of community by connecting you with others. These actions also support your emotional health by helping to cultivate an optimistic attitude. The CRS community is already a good steward of improving our environment through a dedication to reducing, reusing, and recycling, but we can also improve our environment by removing clutter or sharing items that no longer serve us with others who might need them, such as donating used books to the Langley High School’s National Honor Society’s Book Drive. Enjoy celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week!
Book Drive Continues Through Friday, February 17
Calling all books – clean out those bookshelves! Students from Langley High
School’s National Honor Society are hosting a book drive at Churchill
Road. All donations will go to elementary schools in need of books in our
area, including our buddy school, Dogwood Elementary.

February 17

Box Tops Update
The results of the most recent quarterly box tops challenge are in, and congratulations are due to Ms. Robosky’s 6th grade and Mrs. Williams’ 1st grade classes. They both achieved 100% participation during the quarter. For their efforts, they were treated to a read-aloud and healthy snack with Mr. Hutzel. A big Bobcat cheer for them!
Our student winners through the first quarter are Dylan Waits (175) and Hamati Chaudhuri (171)! They have turned in the most Box Tops so far this year.
Congratulations to all of you for helping our school earn money!
You can be a winner, too – just collect Box Tops from household products and grocery items and bring them to school.
Remember, to receive credit for your Box Tops, make sure they are labeled with your full name and teacher’s name. Please trim them on the dashed lines and then give them to your teacher or drop them in the collection bin in the front office.
