Principal’s Message
On behalf of the entire staff, Mrs. Montgomery, Ms. Cherry and I would like to thank all of the parents who made the decision to send their children to Saturday Academy for extra mathematics support. We are off to an amazing start. I had the opportunity to be present for the first two weeks. We had 109 and 121 students in attendance.
The Mount Vernon Woods Family would like to welcome Mrs. Stephanie Almquist to the family. Mrs. Almquist will be here two days a week to provide some administrative support to our school. She will work with our teachers in Collaborative Learning Team (CLT) meetings as they plan instruction to meet the needs of our students.
Congratulations to our Math Title 1 teacher Dr. Price. Dr. Price completed her doctoral degree last week. We are very proud of her success and representing Mount Vernon Woods and FCPS in a very positive manner. I know how important such an accomplishment is for Dr. Price and her family because I just completed my doctoral studies a few weeks ago.
Dr. Clint M. Mitchell Principal
Congratulations
The MVWS Family congratulates Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Price for completing their doctoral studies. We are proud of both of you!
Traffic Update
At the beginning of the school year, I asked the Office of Risk Management and Security to conduct a traffic study at our school. Based on the results of the study, I wanted to share a few things with you.
- We had a fence installed to “funnel” our walkers in one direction to the crosswalk.
- VDOT came in and properly marked the speed bumps and added all the necessary signs.
- There is a hearing at the Board of Supervisor’s office at 1200 Government Center Parkway on February 14th to eliminate parking on the south side of Fielding Street.
- We are in the process of requesting a school crossing guard. A proposal was sent to the appropriate offices.
New Diagnostic Assessment at MVWES
Mount Vernon Woods Elementary will be joining the FCPS i-Ready diagnostic assessment tool pilot program to assess all students in 3rd and 4th grade. i-Ready is an adaptive assessment in Reading and Mathematics. This tool is being piloted at several FCPS schools. We were very fortunate to join the pilot at this time. Thanks to Mr. Greenfelder, Executive Director of School Support and Mr. Terry Dade, Assistant Superintendent for Region 3 for purchasing this tool to help us provide our students a great foundation for the future.
Mid-year DRA 2 Results
We are in the process of completing our Mid-year DRA 2 assessments in Reading. At the beginning of the year, I provided you with the percentage of students reading below grade, on grade level and above grade level. Once, we have all the results, I will send it home in the Panther Press.
Saturday Academy
Saturday Academy is off to an excellent start. Students are receiving support in Reading and Mathematics. Class sizes are 12 students to 1 teacher. We had 109 students present during the first week and 121 students during the second week. Parents, I know some of you made the decision to decline the invitation due to other conflicts. We hope you take the time to work with your children at home because they were invited because of their math performance on the SOL tests last year and first quarter e-cart assessments at MVWES.
