 Student Attendance
Please
report a child’s absence by calling the attendance line at 703-814-8787 or by
emailing BrookfieldESAttendance@fcps.edu
in
order to excuse an absence.
Research has shown
that there is a strong correlation between successful school performance and
attendance at school. When a student
misses more than ten days in a school year, it is often reflected in the
student’s grades and level of student confidence.

Visitor Management System (VMS)
The new FCPS Visitor Management
System (VMS) was recently installed in our main office at Brookfield. We will
begin using this system on February 7, 2017. The office staff will be available
to assist you.
Visitors entering an FCPS school
must register at the VMS with a valid driver’s license, valid DMV identification
card, military ID, or passport for registration and subsequent check-ins. This
applies to all parents, visitors, and volunteers.
For the safety of your student(s)
as well as the staff, you will not be permitted in the building unless you have
valid identification, and have registered at the VMS station.

Our school counselors have been working with our students this year to fill each others buckets. The buckets represent mental and emotional health. You can fill a person's bucket with actions or words that show that you care about someone.

National School Counseling Week
This week we celebrate our wonderful school counselors, Carole Zendle and Monica Evans, for all their work to support our entire Brookfield community. National School COunseling Week is celebrated to focus public attention on the unique contributions of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for college and careers. Every day, school counselors work with students, families, and staff to address the academic, social/emotional, and college and career needs of all students. For more information about FCPS school counseling visit https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-counseling-services

February Energy Train: Brushing 2 minutes, morning & night
Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease and it is totally preventable. Virginia recently earned a C+ in the Oral Health Report card due to 47% of third graders experiencing some tooth decay. Did you know that more than 51 million school hours are lost each year in the United States due to dental related illness? Poor oral health, including early tooth loss, gum disease, pain and infection can affect a child’s speech development, school performance and lower his or her self-esteem. February’s Health Promotion message is:
“Get On the Energy Train: Brushing 2 minutes, morning & night = A Healthier You!”

FCPS Budget Information
Last week, Fairfax County
Public Schools (FCPS) Interim Superintendent Steve Lockard presented the school
system’s Proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Budget of $2.8 billion to the Fairfax
County School Board. The FY 2018 (2017-18 school year) Proposed Budget focuses
on two key priorities from the FCPS Strategic Plan Ignite: employee
compensation and classroom resources, and includes $44 million for an
average step increase of 2.5 percent for all eligible employees, and an
additional $33 million to move teacher salaries closer to the regional market
average.
The proposed budget is the
starting point of the budget process, which ends in May with the School Board’s
adoption of the Approved Budget. The School Board held a budget work session
on January 23, and will hold a public hearing on the Proposed Budget on
January 30, with additional hearings on January 31 and February 1 if
needed.
