Students and staff members dressed up in fashions from many eras to show their school spirit on "Blast from the Past" SCA Spirit Day last Friday.
Good evening, Lane parents and guardians,
Welcome to February! Wow, this year is really flying by! Our big news this week is a timely reminder that our second grading quarter ends this Friday, and with the end come changes to the school schedule. Students will be released two hours early at 2:05 p.m. this Friday, February 3rd, and Monday, February 6th, is a full Teacher Work Day, so students do not report at all. The office and SACC will both be open regular hours on both days.
In other news, we would like to thank all the students and staff members who showed both their school spirit and a love of history on “Blast from the Past Day” last Friday. What a great array of eras we found wandering our hallways – from ancient Egyptian goddesses to 1990s grunge rockers. It was such fun! Special thanks to the SCA members and their staff sponsors, Laura Schadle and Whitney Dierman, for hosting this spectacular spirit day!
We also experienced our first two-hour weather delay this week, and there are likely to be more. Please pay attention to local news outlets and the FCPS website and social media accounts when wintry weather threatens, and please familiarize yourself with our Inclement Weather Policy. You can find it on our school website.
That’s all for this week!

“Winter Quest” Quest Cards Due This Friday!
As the second quarter comes to an end, so does Lane’s P.E. department’s “Winter Quest” fitness challenge. Please remind your child to turn in his or her completed Quest card no later than this Friday, February 3rd. Thanks to everyone who participated in the program this year!
“Early Bird” Yearbook Order Deadline Extended Until February 17th!
We’ve extended the pre-sale deadline for our 2016 - 2017 school yearbook! The basic book is still just $16 as long as you order by Friday, February 17th. The price will go up to $20 on February 20th, so order now and save! There are options such as imprinted name on the cover, extra autograph pages, and stickers you can choose to add.
PLEASE NOTE: This year, all sales are online only. Ordering is simple: Just go to http://ybpay.lifetouch.com, put in yearbook ID code 10217417, and pay with your credit card.
Ordering early is the only way to guarantee your child will get a book. If you wait until the end of the year to purchase a copy, you may not be able to get one. We have sold out the past few years.
If you are not able to order online but would still like to order a book, you may send cash (exact change please) to pay for the book. Please be sure to include the child’s name and teacher so that we can place the order correctly on your behalf. Checks will not be accepted and will be returned. Please contact parent liaison and yearbook coordinator Melanie Crosby Hardy at macrosby@fcps.edu or 703-924-7717 if you have questions.

Parents of Kindergarten Students: Language Immersion Program Information for 2017-2018 Now Available – Online Lottery Registration Opens TODAY!
Each year, rising kindergarteners and first graders have the chance to participate in immersion programs available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish offered at different elementary schools across the county. In these immersion programs, children spend half of the day in the target language learning math, science, and health. Target language arts skills are integrated in the content area skills. The other half of the day is spent learning in English, focusing on English language arts and social studies. The instructional program follows the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Program of Studies (POS) at each grade level. Math, science, and health were chosen because they use manipulatives and concrete, hands-on activities, both of which help with the natural second language acquisition process. Students are able to connect the skills learned across both languages.
Placement in these popular programs is determined by lottery. Online registration for that lottery is now open! Registration is open to all rising kindergarteners and first graders living in Fairfax County. Please note that FCPS does not provide transportation for students who reside outside the attendance area of the immersion schools.
You can find more information about the immersion programs, including specific languages at specific schools, answers to frequently asked questions, and a schedule of information meetings at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/world-language-immersion-programs-registration.
