Public Hearing for FY 2018 Proposed Budget to Be Held on January 30

Last week, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Interim Superintendent Steve Lockard presented the school system’s Proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Budget of $2.8 billion to the Fairfax County School Board. The FY 2018 (2017-18 school year) Proposed Budget focuses on two key priorities from the FCPS Strategic Plan Ignite: employee compensation and classroom resources, and includes $44 million for an average step increase of 2.5 percent for all eligible employees, and an additional $33 million to move teacher salaries closer to the regional market average.

The proposed budget is the starting point of the budget process, which ends in May with the School Board’s adoption of the Approved Budget. The School Board will hold a budget work session on January 23, and a public hearing on the Proposed Budget on January 30, with additional hearings on January 31 and February 1 if needed.

FCPS is efficient

#OurFCPS: Together It's Possible

FCPS is a responsible steward of the taxpayers’ investment in county schools. More than 85 percent of FCPS’ budget goes to instructional programs, ten percent goes towards transportation and facilities, and four percent goes to general support. FCPS is efficient, as more than 90 percent of employees are based in schools.

By working together—parents, employees, students, and community members—we can shape a thriving future for our students and everyone who works and lives in Fairfax County.

It’s not my FCPS, it’s not your FCPS, it’s #OurFCPS.

Arts Alive: Cappies Review of Falls Church's Production of Shrek the Musical

Fairfax County Public Schools offers a rich theater curriculum, especially at the high school level. Many FCPS high schools participate in the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Critics and Awards Program for High School Theatre, otherwise known as the Cappies. There are fifteen Cappies chapters across the United States and Canada.

The Cappies is a program through which high school theater and journalism students are trained as critics, attend shows at other schools, write reviews, and publish those reviews in local newspapers.
