Congratulations to all of our 5th and 6th grade musicians for a terrific concert at Rachel Carson!
Dear Families,
What a musical celebration we had Wednesday night! A standing ovation goes
out to our chorus, strings, and band students for their wonderful
performances. The stands of Rachel Carson were packed with an audience
ready to hear pieces on which our children have been working hard this
semester. Our young musicians couldn’t be so successful without the
encouragement of parents, families, and friends and we thank you for supporting
the arts. And we congratulate our music teachers, Mrs. Fox and Mrs. Murphy
(chorus), Dr. Collins and Ms. Geers (strings), Mrs. Cunningham and Ms. Burch
(band) for cultivating such talent in our students.
We would like to send our best wishes to the 4th grade string students for the upcoming
concert this afternoon! Under the direction of Dr. Cheri Collins, these
beginning students have learned tremendously and will perform their pieces with
talent and poise. We are such a lucky school to be filled with
wonderfully talented students!
This week I attended a briefing at which FCPS Interim
Superintendent, Steve Lockard, proposed a budget for next school year focuses
on two key priorities from the FCPS Strategic Plan Ignite: employee compensation and classroom resources. As FCPS
begins this journey into county budget talks, support from the community is
imperative. This link,
2018 Budget Info, provides detailed
information about the proposed budget and how FCPS families and the community
can lend their support.
Looking ahead, Family Science Night is
coming to our School. Please join us
for Family Science Night this Thursday, January 19th, from 6:00 PM
to 8:00 PM, brought to you by the Children’s Science Center. Activities
include: Castle Geometry: Math in 3D!, Mix Up at the Lab!: Look Alike
Liquids, Fingerprint Analysis: Forensic Science among others.
Students will be participating in these hands-on experiments, specially
designed to provoke interest in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM) subjects.
And finally, as the weather turns cold, it remains
our intention to hold outdoor recess daily unless there is a wind chill
advisory or warning, or other weather conditions that prevent our students from
having free play in fresh air. On cold days, please ensure your children
come to school wearing multiple layers and are appropriately dressed to go
outside during recess (warm coats, hats, gloves, etc.).
Just a reminder that
students have two three day weekends in a row – no school on Monday, January 18th
in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and on Friday, January 20th,
for Inauguration Day.
Sincerely,
Gail Porter,
Principal and Dave Gerstner, Assistant Principal
Our students love the opportunity to practice their balancing skills in PE!
