Holmes MS Updates - 1/13/17

Principal's Note - January 13, 2017

Dear Holmes Families:

Hello, Happy New Year, and Happy Friday the 13th!  I know that it has been awhile since I have sent our weekly newsletter, and I apologize for that.  Back to our Friday updates!

Thank you for voting for our Outstanding Employees along with our staff members.  I am excited to announce that the following staff members were selected, and their names will be forwarded to the pyramid level:

  • Outstanding teacher: Bridget Cheatham (Health & PE)
  • Outstanding new teacher (within first 3 years): Hannah Lowson (Spanish)
  • Outstanding leader: Yolma Torres (Counselor)
  • Outstanding support employee: Jose Moreno (Building Supervisor)
  • Outstanding hourly employee: Berta Stamp (Parent Liaison & Office Assistant)

We will formally recognize these staff members along with all of the nominees at our faculty meeting on Tuesday, February 7th.

Join us for our upcoming Curriculum Night for rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders (current 5th, 6th, and 7th graders) on Thursday, January 19th, at 6:30 PM!  You will learn a lot of valuable information to help you and your student plan for next year as they select courses.

We hope to see you on Thursday!

Sincerely,

Margaret Barnes

Next Week's Class Schedule

  • Monday, January 16th: NO SCHOOL
  • Tuesday, January 17th: 7-period day (we will lose ER 1 & 2)
  • Wednesday, January 18th: Odd Block Day
  • Thursday, January 19th: Even Block Day (with ER 3 & 4)
  • Friday, January 20th: NO SCHOOL

A note about inclement weather and short weeks:

For the most part (with very few exceptions), our bell schedule remains the same regardless of short weeks, early release days, or snow days:

  • Mondays are 7-period days
  • Tuesdays & Thursdays are even block days with ER periods
  • Wednesday & Fridays are odd block days

For example, if we have classes on Tuesday (an even block day), and snow day on Wednesday (an odd block day), we would not make up the odd block day if we came back on Thursday; Thursday would remain an even block day with ER.  If we have multiple snow days over time and notice an imbalance in odd vs. even days, then we will make adjustments to balance out instruction and announce them with as much notice as we can.

This upcoming week, we will have an exception with Tuesday as a 7-period day to balance out the week.  When we can anticipate an imbalance in the schedule, we do make adjustments, and we will let students and parents know in advance.
