Karen Corbett Sanders' Newsletter

Dear Families,

Welcome back, students and parents and Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had an enjoyable Holiday Season and a nice break. It's hard to believe that we have completed the first week back and are almost half way through the school year! This winter and spring promises to be quite busy as the School Board undertakes a search for a new Superintendent, grapples with what promises to be a tough budget cycle and continues with our annual work program which includes assessing progress on achieving our strategic plan, adopting the annual capital improvement plan and much more.  I value the input that I have already received from a number of constituents and encourage all of you to make sure your voices are heard at this important time facing our school system.  There are a number of opportunities in the coming weeks.

Additionally, the School Board approved the 2017-18 calendar for FCPS which sets the first day of school as Monday, August 28, 2017, and the last day as Friday, June 15, 2018. The approved calendar includes a two-week winter break (December 18, 2017 to January 1, 2018) and a one-week spring break (March 26-30, 2018). View the approved calendar.

Superintendent Search Update

The School Board has retained the services of Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) to provide counsel as we conduct our Superintendent recruitment efforts. The Board has scheduled individual stakeholder meetings in January in order to identify characteristics Fairfax County residents value in this key leadership position.  Ten community forums have been scheduled throughout the county to obtain community input.

Each year, Fairfax County Public Schools develops a five-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) to address future facility needs. The CIP assesses requirements for new construction, capacity enhancements, renovations, and site acquisition. Actual completion dates for CIP projects depend on cash flow and debt service limitations established by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
