Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

My staff and I thoroughly enjoyed attending the VSTE conference in Virginia Beach earlier this week.  For three days, we attended valuable technology sessions and look forward to implementing our learning in classrooms, and sharing knowledge with other staff members.  Thank you for your support of teacher professional learning!

Next week will be our final full week of school before winter break and it is sure to be filled with holiday spirit!  Staff members will have fun activities to enjoy throughout the week, and we are sure students will be excited for the upcoming winter break.  We will wrap up the week with a Holiday Spirit Day on Friday, December 16 and all students and staff members are encouraged to wear holiday clothing and accessories.  All students will also have the opportunity to participate in a holiday sing-a-long during their specials class time on Friday.

Please note that the school and office will be closed during Winter Break from December 19 – January 2 and school will resume on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.  Happy holidays!

Sincerely,

Lori Cleveland, Principal

Hour of Code Week at GBW

Students at GBW enjoyed learning about Computer Science and exploring lessons and games on the Hour of Code website. If your child would like to explore more activities at home they can visit the link below to learn more! Hour of Code Website

  • Computer science is foundational. Every 21st century student should have the opportunity to learn how to create technology. Computer science is changing every industry on the planet.

  • Computing is the #1 source of wages in the U.S. There are more than 500,000 computing jobs open nationwide.

  • Students also love it! Recent surveys show that computer science and engineering rank near the top of classes students like “a lot”.

SCA Spirit Day - Holiday Wear

The SCA invites students and staff to celebrate the Holidays by wearing holiday clothes and accessories to school on Friday, December 16! Whether it be reindeer antlers, a Santa hat or your favorite shirt from the movie Elf, we hope you will join us!

Recognize an Outstanding GBW Teacher or Staff Member

Would you like to participate in recognizing GBW teachers and staff that are outstanding at what they do?

FCPS has is implementing a  process  at all schools in the county  to help with recognizing great teachers and staff.  If you would like to nominate, please use the google form below.

Once GBW has a nominee list created, then the nominated Outstanding Teachers from every school will go on to the pyramid level where a Pyramid Outstanding Teacher will be selected. Then each of the five Regions will then select their Region Outstanding Teacher, who will serve as the finalists for the coveted Fairfax County Public Schools Outstanding Teacher Award.

Additionally, an Outstanding Teacher from both the Elementary and Secondary school levels will be recognized in the overall 2017 Outstanding Teacher category.

Schools will also select an Outstanding New Teacher (a teacher within their first three years of teaching) and will submit nominees for the other school-based award categories: Outstanding Principal, Outstanding New Principal, Outstanding Leader, Outstanding Support and Outstanding Hourly Employee, where selection processes will be conducted at the Pyramid level, then Region level.

Regions will select winners for all of the nine school-based awards. The enhancements to the FCPS awards program will result in a larger number of employees being acknowledged for their great work as well as more recognition from across all schools and departments in the Division

FCPS is  excited about this new process and hopes that school communities will  help recognize the  many  outstanding employees.   If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Kate DeSantis.

PTA News

  • Chair Needed for Read-a-thon Fundraiser - The PTA needs a fundraising chair for our Read-a-thon.  This position will require coordination between the PTA and the school and publicizing the event.  This will be our one large fundraiser this year.  If you can help, please email greenbriarwestpta@gmail.com.

  •  Spring PTA Book Swap - The GBW PTA will place a collection bin in the lobby starting Friday, December 9 in preparation for our annual Spring PTA Book Swap. This event complements the spirit of Read Across America Week at GBW. On March 2, each student will be able to choose a gently used book of their choice to take home. Board books, picture books, comics, chapter books are all welcome as our students have a variety of interests.  This is a well-loved opportunity for students each year!  We have over 940 students in our school so for every student to choose a book, we need your help.  Thank you for your support!
