Chris Herren Delivered a Powerful Message about Drug Addiction
Twice this week, former NBA player, Chris Herren, spoke to packed high school auditoriums of students and parents about his harrowing experiences with drug and alcohol dependence
and his journey to recovery. The events, co-sponsored by McLean, Langley and Woodson high schools and their PTSA's, brought Herren's cautionary message to their communities.
Herren’s addictions began with beer in the basement while hanging
out with friends in his Fall River, Massachusetts home at age 14.
That beer led to years of struggle with dangerous addictions to
cocaine, pills, alcohol and heroin. Multiple overdoses,
hospitalizations, treatment programs and relapses continued
throughout his days as a young, successful athlete. He successfully hid his addictions from family and friends, until the addictions began to impact his career.
