A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPALS

November is here!  This year is moving right along!  We personally want to thank all of the volunteers for your support with the book fair and the fall festival.  We would not have had such a fun and successful event if it weren’t for your support.

On November 11th, we will honor all Veterans.  We appreciate the sacrifice you and your family make to keep this great nation safe!  We hope that you’ll participate in our “Wall of Honor” where we invite our students to send in photos of their loved ones who have either served or currently serving in the United Stated Military.  Our goal is to fill the windows of the front office with pictures of every branch of service to honor their years of service.

In addition, we ask that you join a classroom or two to share how you have served our country.  Please feel free to wear your uniform so that our students get to see all branches of the military. Each class will honor Veterans in their own special way.

Warm regards,

Mrs. Cage and Ms. Bower

FUN FRIDAY

Energy Zone

The mission of FCPS Food and Nutrition Services is to influence a generation by guiding children to adopt life-long healthy eating behaviors. FNS is committed to providing a visionary program that is rooted in fresh and locally sourced items and linked to nutrition education.

While Nutrition Services has always been dedicated to feeding children, we proudly introduce program enhancements designed to re-energize the Energy Zone brand. Some of the new initiatives include salad bars and breakfast in the classroom in elementary schools, Fresh Express salads and sandwiches in middle and high schools, and a Signature Line of specialty items for faculty and staff.

Breakfast is often described as the most important meal of the day. Research suggests that when children consume a nutritious breakfast they do better in school. FNS is expanding student outreach by partnering with schools to implement alternative service models such as breakfast in the classroom and grab-and-go.

FNS is partnering with Real Food for Kids to add salad bars to all elementary schools over a five-year period. Salad bars offer a variety of nutritious choices every day and encourage children to consistently build meals based on a foundation of colorful fruits and vegetables. Science-based research proves that changing access and availability in school settings has a direct correlation to wellness. Salad bars ultimately have the ability to transform school nutrition because they provide the underpinning that link the cafeteria to farms, classrooms and beyond.

Students in Fairfax deserve a nutrition program that compliments the unparalleled, high-quality education they receive. A full range of changes are in the works that will showcase Fairfax County Public Schools as a national nutrition model. FNS is excited to demonstrate that we can change perceptions about school food, provide children with access to nutritious meals, and maintain a financially self-supporting program with a healthy bottom-line.
