Make a Difference in Fairfax County: Register for VolunteerFest

VolunteerFest, held on Saturday, October 22, is a local celebration of National Make a Difference Day. This year is the 22nd year Volunteer Fairfax has presented this service opportunity designed to mobilize hundreds of volunteers to help nonprofits in our neighborhoods tackle projects large and small.  See a list of projects and to register to participate.  Scroll down to Daniels Run and then register to participate!!

Please consider volunteering at Daniels Run!  We only have 11 people registered, and we need 60!!

Please join us at VolunteerFest, Volunteer Fairfax’s local celebration of National Make A Difference Day on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016 from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.  Meet at Door #1.  After 9:00 a.m., follow the signs.

Daniels Run volunteers will expand and enhance the Literacy Garden (adjacent to the library) and the Vegetable Garden (adjacent to the science tech lab).  Both areas are used as outdoor learning spaces for all grade levels.  Work will include weeding, mulching, and planting native plants.

Additionally, volunteers will paint designs and activities on the side play-area blacktop next to the Kindergarten/First Grade Wing.

If time allows, we would like to remove invasive plants from the schoolyard habitat in the back of the school.

Please bring a lunch and water bottle.

Minimum age with parent/guardian-4 yrs. old

Minimum age without parent/guardian-15 yrs. old

Work in the courtyards and blacktop is free of poison ivy and insects have not been a problem.  If you volunteer to remove invasive plants in the back, there is a possibility you will find poison ivy and insects.

All volunteers should wear long sleeves and pants.  If someone has special garden tools they prefer to use and garden gloves - that's fine.  Otherwise gloves and tools will be provided.

Wanted:  Judges for the Pumpkin Decorating Contest

The DRES spirit committee is having a pumpkin decorating contest for teachers and staff.  We are looking for a few parents to help us judge the pumpkins and award some prizes.  Judging would take place sometime the last week of October.  If you are interested in helping us out, please email Melanie Rogers, mrrogers2@fcps.edu

Lunch Room Volunteer Support

We welcome any parent or guardian who would like to support the cafeteria during lunch.  Students are often in need of additional condiments and our younger students need assistance opening bottles and packets.  If you are interested in volunteering, please do so using the sign-up-genius link below.

We are off to a great start with raising money for our Innovation Space! We've raised over $3800, which is awesome, but we still need your help to reach our goal of $28,000. If you haven't already registered your child online, please do so at www.thegetmovincrew.com. Step-by-step directions went home in last week's folder, but can also be found on the PTA website here. Our first collection date for any cash/check donations is this Monday, October 24th. Please submit donations to your child's teacher and make sure the envelope is labeled with your child's name and teacher.   If you have any questions, please contact Katy Malesky at drevicepresident@gmail.com

School of Excellence Survey

As a past recipient of the National School of Excellence Award, we are looking to achieve excellence status again by participating in National PTA School of Excellence Program. We need your help to do this and it will only take 5-10 minutes of your time. Simply click here (en español) to share your experiences at our school in a brief survey. Please check your child's Thursday folder this week for more detailed information.
