Butterflies took a quick drink from the flowers and then off to Mexico they go!
Dear Families,
Chances are, if you visit our school you will see the use of technology
evident throughout the building. First grade students use netbooks to reinforce
reading proficiency and support other skills being learned in class. Walk in a kindergarten
class, and you’ll see students on iPads using apps to apply skills they have
been learning. Our fifth graders eagerly await the big Global Awareness
Technology Project that will come later this year. We continue to be
excited about the use of technology in the school, an important part of
preparing students for the 21st century!
Earlier this week, our fourth graders took advantage of a technology tool
for distance learning. To complement their studies of Virginia history, the
classes mixed together to interact with an historian from the Virginia
Historical Society in Richmond. They were exposed to primary sources,
such as Captain John Smith’s (1607) and Willem Blaeu’s (1644) maps of Virginia,
and were challenged to look closely and draw conclusions based on the details
they observed. Distance Learning is a Grade Level Enrichment (GLE)
activity that was brought to our school by the PTA. Funds for the
required technology came directly from money raised by Friends of Floris.
Speaking of Friends of Floris,
your generous donations support so many other activities that children are
involved in on a daily basis. Not a member? There’s still time to
join! Please visit our PTA website to learn how you can help support our
students.
I also encourage all parents to be involved in the PTA. The meetings
provide important information about PTA business, and many times guest speakers
are invited to share their knowledge with those who attend. At our next
meeting, on October 18th, we are looking forward to a presentation
on VA 529 with a guest speaker. We hope you will be able to join us to learn
more about this important topic.
Sincerely,
Gail Porter, Principal and Dave
Gerstner, Assistant Principal

your help! We’re more than 1/3 of the
way to our goal of $30,000, but we need YOUR help. We’re asking everyone to participate this
year. Recommended contributions are $80
per child or $150 per family, but if you’re one of our super-frequent
volunteers, or if those levels present a hardship for your family, anything
will help. Please send in a check to the
“Floris ES PTA” via your classroom teacher, or you can visit our website
