A report prepared by the Center for Regional
Analysis at George Mason University concludes that Fairfax County Public
Schools, as the largest employer within Fairfax County, contributes $2.2
billion to the Fairfax County economy and is one of the most important sources
of local economic activity.
All FCPS
schools will be closed for students on October 7 for a school planning day. Also,
October 10 is the Columbus Day holiday, and all schools and offices will be
closed. Classes will resume on October 11. See the 2016-17 calendar.
Students
from Fairfax County Public Schools’ class of 2016 posted SAT scores above state
and national averages, according to results released recently by the Virginia
Department of Education. SAT results compiled by the College Board show that
FCPS’ students posted average scores of 558 in Critical Reading, 572 in
Mathematics, and 542 in Writing for an overall composite score of 1672, up
three points from last year’s overall composite score of 1669.
Eight
schools in FCPS—Centreville, Falls Church, Langley, Lee, Madison, and South
County High Schools, Hayfield Secondary School, and Thomas Jefferson High School
for Science and Technology—improved on all three sections of the SAT.

In the case of emergency for a weather-related closing, delay, or early dismissal, the FCPS website will automatically include an alert at the top of each page with the appropriate information (see sample above). This information will remain posted until normal operations have resumed, or you click "Close This Alert" to remove it. There is no Emergency tab as in the past.
Springfield Estates Elementary School is one of 329 schools named as an Exemplary High Performing School in the National Blue Ribbon School program by the U.S. Department of Education.

For the sixth
consecutive year, students in Fairfax County Public Schools will join together
to participate in International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 5. The
day is celebrated as a way to promote physical activity while reducing traffic
congestion and pollution near schools.
All students
are encouraged to walk or bike to school where safe to do so or walk to their
bus stops on October 5. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children to
school and to work with their schools, PTAs, or PTOs to gather in groups for
the event. Schools that are launching a schoolwide effort to participate can
register online.
The third annual FCPS Mental Health and Wellness Conference will be held on
Saturday, October 29, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Fairfax High School. The
keynote speaker will be Dr. Dena Simmons,
director of implementation at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, and
the featured speaker will be Dr. Gloria Addo-Ayensu,
Fairfax County Director of Health. A wide variety of resource tables will be
available to participants, as will more than 50 breakout session options,
including a special screening of the new documentary, Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the
Science of Hope.

Study Travel and Service Learning Program opportunities, operated
by EF Education First, an approved FCPS vendor. Global citizenship is a key
21st century skill essential for academic and professional success. The FCPS
International Study Travel and International Service Learning programs promote
in-depth exploration, greater cultural understanding, and hands-on learning
tied to the curriculum in countries throughout the world.
The 2017 programs include opportunities for
FCPS students in grades 7-12 throughout Italy, China, Ecuador, and Costa Rica
and focus on language immersion, service learning, environmental science, and
global leadership.
