peprally2

Our administration team - Principal Mrs. Contreras (right), Assistant Principal Ms. Reynolds (center), and the newest Lane Lion leader Assistant Principal Mrs. Coleman (left) - led the pride at yesterday's spirited pep rally!

Good afternoon, Lane Parents and Guardians!

What an AWESOME second week we’re having here at Lane! Yesterday was an amazing day full of school spirit as we kicked off the new school year with a pep rally full of Lane Lion pride! I bet they could hear us roaring halfway down the street! We’d like to give a special shout-out to our pep rally planners – and SCA sponsors for the year - kindergarten teacher Laura Schadle and fourth-grade teacher Whitney Dierman. They rock - and they had the whole school rocking too!

On a slightly quieter though no less spirited note, it was wonderful to see so many parents – old and new – attend last night’s PTA meeting. I hope that those who came to this first meeting continue to come each month and to be active in the many programs this terrific organization sponsors. If you weren’t able to make it to last night’s meeting, please consider attending one in the future. Our PTA does so much for our school, but they cannot do it without you!

At the meeting, we were able to introduce our newest staff member – our new second Assistant Principal Nikki Steptoe-Coleman – to parents.  If you weren’t able to make it to the meeting, we hope you’ll introduce yourself at another event soon!

As we mentioned in last week’s Weekly Roar, this is Safety Week here at Lane, where we spotlight and practice a different safety drill each day. Monday, we held our second fire drill; students are quickly mastering the routine of this important safety program. We will continue to hold a weekly fire drill through the end of September and then practice monthly. Yesterday, we held our first tornado drill – another important routine to learn, as you never know when the winds will begin to blow. You can see the terrific "turtle" positions in the photo to the right. Today, we practiced a lockdown drill, in which we practice the procedures we follow in case of an intruder or possible violence in the school building. Tomorrow we will complete our fourth and final drill for this week – an earthquake drill.

Finally, we’d like to remind all parents of students in kindergarten through second grade (including multiage classes) and all of our special-education classes that we will hold your Back-to-School Night TONIGHT – Wednesday, September 14th. The program will begin at 6 p.m.; doors will open at 5:45. Please proceed directly to your child’s classroom when you arrive; we will begin promptly at 6 with a short introduction video. A couple of important things to note:

  • We will host two sessions for parents who have students in multiple classrooms. The first session will run from 6 until 6:45; the second, from 6:55 until 7:30.
  • Parking will be EXTREMELY limited. Please walk or carpool to the school if at all possible.
  • This program is designed for parents only, and CHILD CARE WILL NOT BE PROVIDED. If your children attend with you, they will need to remain with you throughout the evening.

That’s all for this week. We hope to see many of you at Back-to-School Night tonight!

Eleanor Contreras, Principal
Katie Reynolds, Assistant Principal
Nikki Steptoe-Coleman, Assistant Principal

Volunteers Needed!

As the school year gets fully under way, programs are also getting under way that need parent volunteer support. If you have some time to give and would like to invest it in our school, please consider these opportunities:

  • Lane Library - The library needs some dedicated volunteers to help out in the library on a regular basis re-shelving books, checking books in/out, and providing other assistance as needed. Training is provided. For more details or to sign-up, please contact Sue Chozick, librarian, at schozick@fcps.edu or 703-924-7716.
  • Field Day – This schoolwide event, sponsored by the P. E. Department, allows students to participate and compete in a variety of games and activities with their class. We will be hosting our Field Day on Friday, October 14th, and we will need a lot of parent volunteers to help to man the activity stations, assisting the students and coordinating the activity. Watch for sign-up information coming soon!
  • Language Arts Book Room – Our Reading Specialist Natasha Findley is looking for volunteers to assist with organizing and updating the school’s book room, where we store class sets of books and leveled reading books for all grade levels. If you’d like to help, please email Ms. Findley at NAFindley@fcps.edu.
  • School Health Room – Would you like to assist in the School Health Room (Clinic), assisting students and supporting our Public Health Nurse Laura Lux and our School Health Room Aide Maria Pfremmer? They would love to have your help! All Health Room volunteers must attend a county training; two sessions will be offered in September and October. You can find details in the flier posted on our school website.

All parents and guardians are welcome to volunteer!
