rising freshman parents to our newsletter! As detailed above, this newsletter
is self-subscribing and self-unsubscribing, which can be done on the FCPS
website.
We also post
information on our Facebook group (www.facebook.com/OaktonHS)
and on Twitter @OaktonHS. Please

Summer Hours
Oakton
High School’s office will be open in the summer from 8 am – 2 pm each day,
though closed on July 4.
AP Exam Scores
This is a reminder
that AP Exam scores will not be mailed to you; rather, they will be available online
on July 7 at 8 am. More information on how to access scores can be found on the
College Board
website; students should be sure to use the same College Board
account to access all information. You will need to have your AP number or FCPS
ID to get scores!
Summer Reading!
Oakton’s reading theme this summer is to “Read Your Movie!”. We have provided suggestions
of some texts that contain a character or characters who demonstrate growth in
at least one of the five pillars of the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate, and
students should choose one of those titles or another related book that has
been made into a movie. The full assignment is online.
AP Summer
Assignments
Some
AP classes have corresponding summer assignments that can be found on our website.
If students are reading a text for an AP class, that can be read in lieu
of the school wide summer reading book. If there is no summer assignment listed
for an AP course you are taking, then students should plan on reading the
school wide summer reading book.
These courses are:
Science: AP Biology, AP Physics 1
English: AP English Language, AP English Literature
World Languages: AP Japanese, AP Spanish, AP
French, AP Chinese
Social Studies: AP Psychology, AP US History
Math: AP Computer Science
Any questions regarding AP Summer Assignments
can be sent to Martha Rodeheaver, myrodeheaver@fcps.edu
Report Cards
Final report
cards will be mailed home in the first week of July.
Summer
Transcript Requests
The
counseling office will send transcripts once a week over the summer.
Please send requests via email to llweir@fcps.edu by Friday of the week
before the transcript is needed.

PSAT –
Important Information for October 19 PSAT date!
Dear Parents/Guardians of Rising
Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Grade Students:
In Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and across the United
States, students in grades nine, ten, and eleven will take a Preliminary SAT
(PSAT) on October 19, 2016. Ninth grade students will take the PSAT 8/9, which
is specifically designed for eighth and ninth graders. Tenth and eleventh grade
students will take the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
The PSAT tests were redesigned for 2015 and beyond and will match the
redesigned SAT that was first available in March 2016.
The PSAT 8/9 and PSAT/NMSQT are standardized tests that are
designed to promote college readiness while preparing students for college
entrance assessments. The PSAT/NMSQT test is cosponsored by the College Board
and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. While only students in grade
eleven are eligible to compete for National Merit Scholarships, taking a PSAT
in grades nine and ten provides excellent practice for taking the PSAT in grade
eleven and for taking the SAT college entrance assessment.
FCPS will
provide the PSAT 8/9 to ninth graders and the PSAT/NMSQT to tenth graders
without cost. The cost of the test for eleventh grade students is $15.00, and
students will register for the PSAT at their schools. Students who receive free
or reduced price meals are eligible for fee waivers. Additional information about the
registration process will be provided in the fall.
The
PSAT measures evidence-based reading and writing and math with a focus on
reasoning, knowledge, skills, and understandings most important for college and
career readiness. The total testing time for the PSAT/NMSQT is 2 hours and 45
minutes, and the total testing time for the PSAT 8/9 is 2 hours and 25 minutes.
Additional information about the redesigned PSAT is available at: https://www.collegeboard.org/delivering-opportunity/redesigned-psat-nmsqt/compare-tests.
All students in grades nine and ten who complete the test will
receive an individual customized score report, which will provide feedback
based on their responses to the test questions. This will be helpful to tenth
graders in preparing to take the PSAT again in eleventh grade and for students
preparing to take the SAT. In addition, PSAT results will help students
identify their strengths and will allow them opportunities to make decisions on course enrollment in
Advanced Placement (AP) and/or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. Eleventh grade students must pay for the
test in order to receive a score report. Students will also continue to have
access to Khan Academy’s free online test preparation that is customized based
on their PSAT scores.
Tenth
and eleventh grade students with disabilities who have been identified for
testing accommodations in a 504 plan or an Individualized Education Program
(IEP) may request accommodations for the PSAT/NMSQT. Accommodations must be
approved by the College Board and documentation must meet the criteria outlined
on their website. Not all students with disabilities require accommodations and
some accommodations received by students in school are not deemed necessary by
the College Board for the purposes of participating in the PSAT. Requests for
accommodations must be completed and received by College Board by August 30, 2016. Each high school has a
designated staff member to assist with requests for accommodations. If you do
not know who that staff member is, please contact your student’s high school student
services office.
For
ninth grade students taking the PSAT 8/9, accommodations are handled at the
school for students with disabilities who have been identified for testing
accommodations in a 504 plan or an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Additional information will be provided in the
fall.
Students may prepare for the PSAT by
visiting www.collegeboard.com,
getting a good night’s sleep prior to the test, and eating breakfast the
morning of the test. I encourage you to discuss the testing with your student.
Best wishes to you and your student.
