Good afternoon, Laurel Hill Parents & Guardians!
Well this is it, the final Weekly Pride Press of the 2015-2016 school year! We’d like to begin this final weekly message with a heartfelt “Thank You!” to all our Laurel Hill families for a wonderful year. You have welcomed all three of us with open arms and open hearts, and we are so happy and honored to be part of such a generous and supportive school community!
We would also like to offer a roaring “Congratulations!” to our sixth grade lions who celebrated their final year of elementary school with an awards ceremony last night. Many of these students are our “Laurel Hill Originals” – the first group of students to spend all seven of their elementary years at Laurel Hill. What a special milestone for them – and for us! We wish all of our sixth graders all the best in their new learning adventures in middle school!
We'd like to wish a fond farewell to all the families who will be leaving Laurel Hill this summer. It's been wonderful getting to know you all and working with your children!
For all the students and families who will be returning to Laurel Hill next year, we are already working hard making plans for another great school year! We will be posting information on our school website during the summer, so please be sure to check it periodically for all the latest news. The supply lists for all grades have been posted on the site, and the PTA’s pre-packaged sale continues until July 15. You can find details on that sale below.
Finally, we’d like to remind everyone again that tomorrow we will release students two hours early at 2:05 p.m.
We hope you all have a great summer, and we’ll see you in September!
~ Ms. Dalton, Dr. Duling, and Mrs. Smith

School News & Notes
End-of-Year Health Room Reminders
-
Tdap documentation for rising sixth graders. Thank you to all of the fifth-grade parents who have already turned in their proof of immunization for their child! If you have not yet provided this important documentation, please do so as soon as possible. All students in Virginia must receive a booster dose of Tdap vaccine prior to entering sixth grade, and documentation must be provided to the school. This documentation can be a copy of your child’s immunization record, or a note on letterhead from your health care provider listing the date, month and year of your child's most recent Tdap booster shot. The Tdap booster can be obtained from your child’s health care provider. Immunizations required for school are also available at the Fairfax County Health Department. Clinic locations and walk-in hours are available online at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/hd/hdclinicsite.htm or call 703-246-2411. Sixth graders cannot begin school in the fall without documentation of having had the Tdap booster.
-
Medication pick-up. All medication stored in the Health Room must be picked up no later than student dismissal time (2:05 p.m.) tomorrow. Medication left in the Health Room after that time will be discarded. It is FCPS policy that medications must be picked up by a parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student, and the school cannot transport it to another school or program.
“Book Your Summer” Event at the Laurel Hill Library – Thursday, June 30, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Studies continue to show that students risk losing reading skills gained during the school year over the summer months. A new program developed by FCPS called “Book Your Summer” hopes to alleviate some of that loss by encouraging students to continue their reading adventures while they’re off from school. When students choose books they want to read and families engage with them about what they are reading, significant summer reading gains can occur!
“Book Your Summer” works like a Bingo game. Rising first through twelfth graders are encouraged to choose books and spend the summer reading using the READ! Activity card as a guide. It’s easy to play. Just choose a path on the READ! Card, complete the activities, and record the titles of the books read. Once the path is complete, submit your “win” online. Participants in each school will qualify for a chance to win school prizes of $50 in books of their choice or even a laptop!
The FCPS program will run from Monday, June 27, to Wednesday, September 7. You can find READ! Cards, book suggestions, and other details on the FCPS website at http://www.fcps.edu/is/book/.
As part of this program, Laurel Hill will host a special Library event on Thursday, June 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We’re still working out the details, but we hope to include read-alouds and other fun activities, as well as the chance for students to check out books. Stay tuned for more information coming soon!
