Good afternoon, Laurel Hill parents and guardians!

May is now more than half over, and it’s been a productive month so far here at Laurel Hill. Our required Standards of Learning (SOL) testing is now under way. Please be sure you know which days your child will take such tests and help him or her feel comfortable about taking them. Their teachers have prepared them well!  If a little additional practice would help ease nerves, remember that practice questions are available online at http://www.solpass.org/login/. Use the password Laurel Hill to log in.

Tonight we will hold a very important PTA meeting in the Library at 7 p.m. We will choose the new leaders for this generous, supportive group that does so much for our school, its students, and its staff. We invite all PTA members to come help build this organization for the coming year, simply by casting your vote or by stepping up to serve. We hope to see you tonight!

As we approach the end of the month, remember that Monday, May 30, is the Memorial Day holiday, and the school and office will be closed.  Summer really is just around the corner!

    Have a great week!

~ Ms. Dalton, Dr. Duling, and Mrs. Smith

Professional photographers will visit the school tomorrow - Thursday, May 19 - to take a panoramic picture of the entire sixth grade and the staff members who work with them. All students should wear their class T-shirts that day. Pictures must be ordered in advance; order forms were sent home last week. Each picture costs $15.

SCA Cereal Drive Begins Tuesday, May 31

Our SCA, under the direction of Ms. Jackowicz and Mrs. d’Alelio,  has organized a cereal drive to benefit the Lorton Community Action Center. Between Tuesday, May 31, and Friday, June 17, the school will collect donations of unopened cereal boxes, which will be distributed to hungry children in the local area over the summer. Drop boxes will be located in the front lobby.

    Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast – Tuesday, June 7, 8:30 a.m.

Laurel Hill would not be what it is and could not do all it does for its students and staff members without the support of our amazing parent and community volunteers! To show our appreciation for all you do, we invite all of you who’ve helped us out this year to attend a special breakfast in your honor before school on Tuesday, June 7. Please mark your calendars if you’ve volunteered and wish to attend. More information will be sent home soon.

End-of-Year Reminders from the Front Office

The end of the school year requires many “housekeeping” tasks to close out this year and get ready for the next. Please read through the following reminders to see if they apply to your family and take appropriate action if necessary.

    • Student Intention Forms for the 2016-2017 school year:  These forms were sent home last month to all currently enrolled students. If you have not already done so, please return your form as soon as possible. If you returned your form and the information has changed, please let us know. The information on these forms helps us immensely with planning for the year ahead, and we need it to be as accurate as possible.
    • If your family is moving before the official end of the school year, please be sure to notify our registrar so that she can properly process all final paperwork. If you are moving over the summer, please let us know that as well so we can prepare records for submission to your child’s new school.
    • Medication pick-up: All medication stored in the Health Room must be picked up no later than student dismissal time (2:05 p.m.) on the last day of school.  Medication left in the Health Room after that time will be discarded.  It is FCPS policy that medications must be picked up by a parent or guardian.  Medication cannot be sent home with your student, and the school cannot transport it to another school or program.
    • New student registration continues. If you have a kindergartener joining Laurel Hill in the fall, please contact our registrar, Mrs. Leckner, at 703-551-5300 to make an appointment to register. You do not need to re-register currently enrolled students who will be returning. If you have friends or neighbors who have children who will be attending Laurel Hill, please direct them to Mrs. Leckner as well.
    • Tdap booster vaccines required for all rising sixth graders before they can start school in the fall. If you are the parent of a current fifth grader, you should make plans now to make sure your child receives this booster before the end of the school year if possible. You must provide proof to the office that the booster has been received before your child will be assigned to a class for next year. Please contact Mrs. Leckner at the number above if you have questions.

    Summer Office Hours

If you have school business to take care of during the summer months – Monday, June 27, through Friday, August 26 – please note that our office will be open limited hours during that time. We will be open for general business from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday (except for Monday, July 4, which is a holiday). Visits during other times will be offered by appointment only.

    PTA Reminders

PTA Elections Meeting TONIGHT, Wednesday, May 18, at 7 p.m.!

The PTA would like to thank all the parents who have stepped forward and expressed an interest in serving on next year’s Board in response to their recent pleas for help! Some positions now have TWO candidates! If you are a PTA member, please plan to attend tonight’s meeting at 7 p.m. in the Library to cast your vote to help us choose the board members who will run the organization next year. Nominations from the floor will also be accepted.

PTA’s “Fire Up Your Feet” Program Boosts Fitness and Possibly Funds for Laurel Hill!

Now that spring has sprung, daily routines and extra activities — like bike rides, nature hikes, walking a dog, neighborhood strolls or walking to and from school — help students get and stay active. These simple activities, and many others, can also provide a positive boost for our school, thanks to the Naitonal PTA’s “Fire Up Your Feet” program.

The Fire Up Your Feet program promotes an active lifestyle, providing ideas to help kids and families get active. Special spring challenges are under way. Laurel Hill families who register with Fire Up Your Feet can help the school by making it eligible for special prizes, like $250 cash.  Just registering helps -  LHES needs at least 20 registered participants to be eligible for those prizes. The school benefits even more as more people register throughout the month and log their physical activities. The challenges are for May only, and activities logged by June 3 count toward the LHES total. Remember, simple things like playing at recess and walking to and from school count!

Just visit VA.FireUpYourFeet.org and sign on today, then log in by June 3 to support Laurel Hill Elementary and local kids!

Sixth Grade End-of-Year Celebrations - Volunteers Needed!

It’s nearly time for our sixth grade lions to leave the Laurel Hill den and move on to South County Middle School! We will celebrate their success at a special ceremony at the middle school on Tuesday, June 21, at 6:30 p.m. The event will be held in the middle school and in the evening to allow more family members to attend and ease concerns such as adequate parking. A small reception with refreshments will follow the ceremony.

The promotion ceremony is just one of the special events the PTA’s Sixth Grade Activities Committee has planned for the end of the year. Here is a list of additional school-day events to add to your calendar:

    • Friday, June 17 – 6th Grade Carnival, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. – featuring lunch, games, and other team activities (comfortable attire and running shoes required)
    • Monday, June 20 – 6th Grade Tournament/Field Day (P.E. Department) – 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. – traditional Field Day games (comfortable attire and running shoes required)
    • Wednesday, June 22 – 6th Grade Dance – 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. (alternative activities will be offered for those students who don’t wish to attend the dance)
    • Thursday, June 23 – Last Day of School – Sixth graders will process out of the building at 2:05 p.m.

These events – especially the carnival and the dance – require a lot of volunteer support. Please see the form sent home last week to all sixth grade parents and let the committee know how you would like to help. You can also sign up online! Just visit http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0f4caeab28aa8-6thgrade.

For more information about these events, please contact Tracy Frye at tracy.frye@cox.net.
