Attendance May 2 – June 7 – no morning phone out

During AP, IB and SOL testing at high schools from May 2, 2016 through June 7, 2016 the morning attendance telephone calls, texts and e-mails to home for reporting a student’s absence will not occur. This temporary suspension reflects the fact that students are often in designated testing sites within the school during the normal attendance-taking time. The evening attendance telephone calls and e-mails will still remain in place.

SOL Testing

This Wednesday, we start SOL testing. Last week, student should have received a letter from one of their teachers with details about each SOL test.

Please note that our bell schedule is modified for some of the test days; the full schedule can be found on our website.

If a student misses an SOL test, then he/she should plan to attend one of the makeup dates: May 31 for English and social studies, and June 1 for math or science. You do not need to email to let us if you are able to make one of the makeup dates and will miss only one SOL test.

If you have any questions about SOL testing, you can email Martha Rodeheaver at myrodeheaver@fcps.edu.

End of Year Schedule

June 21st is graduation day for our seniors! Unlike in years past, we will have school on that day; specifically, that will be the day for our Freshman Presentations of Learning. More details to come soon on the end of the year!

AP Scores Online

As we finished AP testing, students and parents are reminded that scores will not be mailed to you; rather, they will be available online on July 7 at 8 am. More information on how to access scores can be found on the College Board website; students should be sure to use the same College Board account to access all information. You will need to have your AP number or FCPS ID to get scores!

Searching for Volunteers

In an effort to increase our students’ awareness of the myriad of career options available to them after high school graduation—Oakton High School is looking for parent/community volunteers who would be willing to speak to high school students about their own career path—what you are doing, how you got there, and what 21st century skills, highlighted in FCPS’s Portrait of a Graduate, you use on a regular basis. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about their career choice and/or who perhaps took an interesting journey to arrive at their current career. We would like to present students with a wide range of career possibilities. In the short term, we are seeking approximately 8 parent volunteers to participate in four 60 minute career panel discussions on June 16th, 2016. A morning session will run from approx. 8:10-11:45 and an afternoon session will run from 11:45-2:55. The audience will be 9th and 10th grade OHS students. Please let Karyn Mrowka kamrowka@fcps.edu know as soon as possible if you are both available and interested in volunteering as a panel discussion member on June 16th.

Graduation Speaker Auditions – May 18

Graduation Reflection Speaker Auditions : Auditions for Graduation Reflection Speaker will be held on Wednesday May 18th beginning at 3:15 pm in the Lecture Hall. You must be present on the day of the auditions. If you intend to audition on May 18th , sign up with Mrs. Burke in the Gold by Friday, May 13th. NO students may be added to the list after 3:00 PM, May 13. Your three-minute speech should reflect on the past four years at Oakton for you and your classmates. Consider how your future will be molded by the experiences you have had here at Oakton!

Seniors, families and friends are all invited. Baccalaureate is a non-denominational celebration held before graduation, containing farewell and “words of wisdom” messages to the graduating class.
Sponsored by Oakton PTSA.

Class of 2017 Post Secondary Planning Sessions

During the week of June 3-9, the counselors of Oakton High School would like to invite our rising seniors to meet with their counselors to discuss any questions and concerns that they have about the college application process before the summer break begins. This opportunity came as a direct response to feedback from the class of 2016 that they wished they had more time with the counselors earlier than our traditional senior conferences during September of each school year. We will be continuing with our fall meetings, but rising seniors can request an appointment with their counselor before school lets out for the summer. Parents are welcome to attend with their child and/or to phone conference in if that works more conveniently with your work schedule. Appointments will be limited to 25 minutes so that we can accommodate as many requests as possible.
Sign up for an appointment slot here by clicking on the link for the appropriate counselor:
