Dear Stone Parents and Guardians,
It was another great week at Stone Middle School. Our seventh graders attended the Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE) Field Trip and the eighth graders attended the Finance Park field trip, which is sponsored by Junior Achievement. Make sure you ask your students about their experiences this week. I would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers who helped chaperone our field trips. A special “Thank You” to Mrs. Sandra Corbett, CEO, InCadence Strategic Solutions and her team who provided Store Front Chaperones for one of our field trips to Finance Park.
The Stone Talent Show was yesterday after school and we had a number of talented students perform. Our students did a great job performing and running the sound and lighting system. Thank you for your support and for sending us so many wonderful students.
Congratulations to Meghan Richmond who successfully auditioned for and made Virginia All-State Chorus. There were well over 1000 students state-wide who submitted their recorded auditions! We are proud of all of our singers.
Next week is the end of the third quarter. Students will be released two hours early, at 12:15 pm on Thursday, April 21st and Friday, April 22nd is a student holiday. The fourth quarter will begin on Monday, April 25, 2016.
Again, thanks to all of our students, parents, teachers, and support staff for an awesome year. If you have any questions about your student's progress at Stone, please do not hesitate to call or email our staff; contact information is listed on our website, www.fcps.edu/StoneMS.
Thanks for all you do for the Stone Community!

STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL – 25TH ANNIVERSARY
Please join us on Thursday, April 28, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for Stone’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. Ormond Stone Middle School was named for Ormond Stone, professor of astronomy and mathematics at the University of Virginia. The school opened in 1991 with 700 students and in less than 10 years doubled in size. With the opening of Liberty Middle School on the other side of Centreville, Stone’s enrollment has stabilized for the past few years to about 800 students.
This celebration is open to the entire Centreville Community. All students, families, and community members are invited to join us on Thursday, April 28th.
PTSA FUNDRAISER at McDonald’s
The PTSA fundraiser at McDonald’s Centreville on 28 is scheduled for Wednesday, April 20, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 20% of the proceeds that evening will benefit the Stone community. Please come out and support the PTSA and Stone Middle School.
THE 10th CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT YOUNG WOMEN LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
This is an opportunity for young women in middle school and high school in Virginia’s 10th District to meet and interact with women who hold leadership roles and have built successful careers in government, business, medicine, media relations, and other professions.
This unique, nonpartisan program is designed to teach young women about leadership and the wide range of careers you may pursue in government or the private sector. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with their peers and special guests in candid, roundtable discussions while sharing insights, advice, and stories. They will also learn about career opportunities in various fields, the legislative process, develop their leadership skills, identify their strengths, and practice effective communication with others to inspire their educational and career goals.
The program is scheduled to begin in June and will continue through the end of August. There will be periodic events, about two to four a month, throughout the 10th Congressional District and at the U.S. Capitol. The application deadline is May 15th, 2016 and can be found: http://comstock.house.gov.
If you have any questions, please reach out to the staff at: VA10LeadershipProgram@mail.house.gov.
REGISTER FOR YOUR SIS PARENT ACCOUNT
Parents were granted access to their children’s grades via the Student Information System (SIS) Parent Account in September. The Parent Account provides access to a wealth of student information, including attendance, report cards, class schedules, grades, course history, and discipline and school information. Students will no longer receive paper copies of their progress report after the next grading period. Please sign up for your Parent Account to access your student’s grades. If you do not have a Parent Account please contact Amy Guinta at Stone and she will help you with your Parent Account. Currently only 70% of our parents have opened their accounts.
STUDENT DRESS CODE
As the weather continues to get warmer, please remind your students to dress appropriately for school. A few tips to remember include (but are not limited to):
• Shorts, skirts, and dresses must be longer than fingertips when arms are extended at side • Tops must have straps or sleeves (no tank tops or halter tops) • Pants and shorts should not sag or undergarments showing
Students who are in violation of the dress code will be asked to change and the parent/guardian may be called to bring alternate clothing if necessary. We appreciate your support in this area as we strive to maintain consistency between home and school.
SOL TESTING – MAY 23 – JUNE 10
The SOLs are standardized tests required by the State of Virginia and provide a snapshot of what your student understands. While your student may get nervous about this upcoming test, he/she should be reassured that we have been preparing them by learning the curriculum and applying it in practice to do our best all year long.
In the final preparations for our SOL testing, your help and support is needed! Please avoid scheduling any appointments on these days. Also, be sure your child has a complete night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and arrives to school on time for testing.
If you are planning on moving from the area and your child will not be present during the testing window, PLEASE let his/her counselor know. A time may be able to be arranged for students to test prior to their departure! Thank you for your help and support.
