Office Hours - Saturday
Please join me at my second monthly office hours
this Saturday, April 2nd, from 10 am-noon, at Panera in the Mosaic District
(8191 Strawberry Ln, Merrifield, VA 22042).
If you would like to meet but aren’t available on
Saturday, please email me with dates and times that work for you to make an
individual appointment: dapalchik@fcps.edu.
We had a lively discussion last month for my first
office hours. Over a dozen people popped by, including parents and two high
school students. The office hours allow time for an open dialogue and
conversation, but if you would prefer to have a private discussion please let
me know ahead of time to plan accordingly.
Pre-Labor Day Opening Survey
As a member of the board’s
Public Engagement Committee, we have worked with our staff and the board on the
engagement around the possibility of opening before Labor Day in 2017-18. As a
result of that, an electronic survey will be sent out to the community soon,
and I encourage you to share your views. It will take only a few minutes, and
will help inform us in our decision making. The decision whether or not to move
forward with the waiver will take place before the end of this school year.
I want to thank everyone who
joined us for the Providence District Supervisor and School Board
Joint Budget Presentation
on March 9th. We had over 100 community members present, and a
lively discussion with the stakeholders involved.
Assistant Superintendent for Financial Services Kristen Michael shares information about the FCPS budget at the Providence District Joint Budget Presentation.
More than 100 people attended the Providence District Joint Budget Presentation on March 9.
The School Board Chairman will
deliver remarks at the Board of Supervisors budget public hearing on April 5th
at 4:00
pm at the Fairfax County Government Center in the Board Auditorium. This will
be followed by public hearings on April 6th and 7th at 1 p.m. in the Government Center Board
Auditorium. With the additional state
funding approved by the General Assembly for FY2017, there is approximately a
$51 million gap between the schools’ advertised budget and the proposed
transfer from the Board of Supervisors included in the County’s Advertised
Budget. If the supervisors choose to pass a four-cent tax increase it would
provide additional revenue of approximately $22.5 million that could be
transferred to schools.
On April 19, the Board of
Supervisors will have their budget mark-up, which determines the budget package
and tax rate. They will adopt the county budget, tax rate resolution, and
transfer amount to schools on April 26.
Once we receive final guidance
from the Board of Supervisors, the School Board will finalize its portion of
the budget cycle. The important dates to keep engaged with that process are:
May 2
School Board conducts budget work
session
May 12
School Board FY 2017 Approved
Budget presented for new business
May 17
School Board holds public hearings
on budget (May 18 if needed)
May 19

session
May 26
