Upcoming Schedule changes
Tomorrow is a gold day for students – so we’ll see you for 2nd
period at 8:10!
The full year’s burgundy and gold calendar can be found on our website.
There is a change to the
schedule, however: this Friday’s originally scheduled burgundy day has been
rescheduled to be a gold day. Note that this correction does
not appear on our burgundy and gold calendar.
We will also have a modified schedule next Wednesday for the Exhibition
of Learning; we will not have Cougar Time Wednesday, and will instead have 3rd
period from 9:46 – 11:16. The rest of the schedule next week will remain the
same.
The 2016 Exhibition of Learning
Oakton High School is pleased to invite you to our annual Exhibition of
Learning event on April 5th and 6th from 8:30 AM to 2:40 P.M. During this
event, Oakton students will display meaningful and well-developed projects
showcasing their skills, passions, and most important learning across the
disciplines. Please join us in celebrating the diversity of learning that is
happening here at Oakton!
This year freshman and sophomore students will be presenting during through
their health/P.E. period. Freshmen and sophomores who are not taking health or
P.E. will be assigned a period to present. Upperclassmen are welcome and
encouraged to participate.
How can I help my freshman or sophomore
prepare for the Exhibition of Learning?
The students are preparing for the Exhibition of Learning through their
English classes, but you could help your student to feel more comfortable
presenting. Ask your student what he or she is planning to present. Listen to
your students planned talking points. Encourage your student to elaborate and
add details. Help him or her anticipate questions that observers may have.
Renovation Meeting – Wednesday,
March 30th at 7 pm
We would like to invite you to attend the Oakton High School renovation
presentation on Wednesday, March 30th from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
The presentation will be led by staff from the FCPS Department of Design and
Construction and Perkins and Eastman architectural firm. We encourage you
to come out to see the plans for the new Oakton - we are excited about the
upcoming renovation and our new building!
PTSA Meeting, April 6th
Please join us in the library for the next PTSA meeting on Wednesday,
April 6th. Casual conversation with Dr. Banbury & Assistant Principal
Michelle Taylor begins at 6:30 PM. The official meeting begins at 7 PM. Don't
miss this month's opportunity to win a $10 Starbucks card (winner must be
present at drawing). Can't make the meeting? Send your comments to Brooks Moran
at president@oaktonhsptsa.org
AP Preregistration
We are hard at work preparing for AP exams from May 2-13!
All students who are registered for an AP exam need to attend
preregistration to fill out demographic information prior to their AP Tests.
The schedule
for preregistration can be found on our website.
Other FAQs
can also be found on our website.
Any questions can be emailed to Alyson Calvello (acalvello@fcps.edu) or Martha Rodeheaver (myrodeheaver@fcps.edu).
AP Proctoring – parent
volunteers needed!
We are looking for parent volunteers to help with AP test proctoring!
Oakton High School students will take over 2900 AP exams over two weeks in May,
and parent support will help administer them smoothly.
If you are able to give your time, we ask that you sign up online.
You may proctor any exam as long as your child is not taking that exam and you
are not a teacher or professor in that subject.
Email Alyson Calvello (acalvello@fcps.edu)
or Martha Rodeheaver (myrodeheaver@fcps.edu)
with any questions. Thank you for your help!
Library
Amnesty Day: Friday, April 1st
Friday
is April Fools’ Day, but the joke is on us! The library
wants to get back the 143 overdue books students still have out and help
students clear up their fines!
For
one day only, April 1st, you can bring in your OVERDUE
books and have your overdue fines for those books forgiven!
If you have a book from this year (or a previous year!) that is currently
overdue and you return it to the library during library hours on Friday (7:45
am – 3:15pm), the fine for that book will be erased. (This does
not apply to previously accrued fines, fines previously paid, or fines for lost
or damaged books.)
Also
on Friday, April 1st, if you come to the library during library
hours (7:45 am – 3:15 pm) to pay your fines, you will only have to pay 50%
of your fines! The other half of your fines will be forgiven for this
day only.
Take
advantage of our foolishness on Library Amnesty Day, and clear up your library
obligations!
(Students
will receive an email in their school Google email notifying them of
obligations this week. Additionally, 1st period teachers will
have library obligation notices to give students on Wednesday morning in class,
identifying the specific book(s) and/or cost of the fine.)
Drop Everything
and Read in the Library – Wednesday, March 30th
Enjoy
reading or have a reading assignment for class? Then “Drop Everything
and Read” Wednesday, March 30th (and every last Wednesday of the
month for the remainder of the school year) in the Library during Cougar
Time! Bring your book and leave your devices behind for 45 minutes of
uninterrupted reading!
Students
who would prefer not to participate in “Drop Everything and Read” should plan
to spend Cougar Time with a teacher this Wednesday and on the last Wednesday of
every month as no other activities will take place in the Library at this time.
VCEE Statewide Competition
Winners
Oakton High School has won a spot in The Governor’s Challenge in
Economics and Personal Finance category, as well as the David Ricardo division,
a rigorous statewide competition to be held Thursday, April 14th at Virginia
Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond.
Oakton High School is one of several teams from across Virginia that will test
their knowledge of economic concepts and apply their skill in personal finance
and economics at the day-long competition. The Oakton High School team earned
an invitation to the championship round following an online competition
conducted by the Virginia Council on Economic Education (VCEE) in association
with the Office of Governor Terry McAuliffe. VCEE is a nonprofit public-private
partnership focused on enhancing economics and financial education in grades
K-12. Regional winners in each division and other high scoring teams were
invited to participate in the “live” championship challenge, according to VCEE
Executive Director Daniel Mortensen.
Students on the Personal Finance Team are the Winners of Region 4 and include:
Ryan Biswas, Vishal Mummareddy, Nikhil Prasad, Matt Wohleben.
Students who did well enough to complete in Richmond on the David Ricardo Team
include: Sambriddi Pandey, Anusha Prahlad, Sirena Yu.
Aline Dolinh and Marriya Schwarz

Oakton seniors Aline Dolinh and Marriya Schwarz won 2016 Scholastic
National Writing Medals this week!
Both writers recently claimed two Gold Medals each in the recent 2016
Scholastic Regional Gold Medals in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia
competition.
This is Aline’s third year as a Scholastic National Writing winner. In her
sophomore year, she was selected as one of only five National Student Poets and
her poetry was published in American Visions and Voices 2014. She earned a 2016
National Writing Gold Medal for Poetry with her poems Asterisk Dearest and
Romance Disguised as Portent of Doom. She also earned a National Gold Medal her
freshman year.
Marriya earned a 2016 National Silver Writing Medal for Critical Essay with her
winning essay From Your Friendly Neighborhood Feminist, which has already been
published twice in online publications.
This year, nearly 320,000 works of art and writing were submitted. Only the top
1% were recognized at the national level.

OHS Physical Night
To participate in sports next school year, your child must have a
physical on file dated on or after May 1, 2016. This includes working out in
the weight room, conditioning, “green days” and try outs.
The Oakton High School Athletic Training Program is offering an opportunity for
students to receive a sports health screening and pre-participation physical
(PPE) on Monday May 16, 2016 from 5:30-8 pm. Our team physicians, as well as a
staff of nurses, physical therapists and certified athletic trainers will be on
hand to provide a thorough screening. If during the screening or physical, the
physicians find something that is questionable to them regarding your child’s
health, they may request further evaluation by another physician. We are asking
for a minimum donation of $50 in exchange for the PPE. Registration is not open
yet, however, to register for a PPE, go to: www.fcps.edu/sports and follow the
links for sports physicals. Walk-ins are also welcome on that evening but we
ask for a $60 donation at that time. This physical is good for the entire
following school year.
This is the Athletic Training Program’s method of fund raising. All the funds
for equipment and supplies are raised at this event. The county provides no
funding for any of the supplies or equipment in the athletic training room that
is used to take care of our athletes. Your support would be greatly
appreciated. You too benefit from this process. Once your child’s VHSL physical
form is completed that night, it stays on file at the school, as well as a
digital copy is kept on our server, so if you need a copy just email one of the
ATCs and we can sent you a copy.
PPE’s are being offered in the same format at every high school in FCPS and are
fund raising efforts at those schools as well. If you can not attend the PPEs
at Oakton H.S., there may be another local high school offering the opportunity
on a date that may be more convenient for you. If you have any questions or
concerns, contact Paul Rupp, MS, ATC at prupp@fcps.edu .
