DRPT to Host Leadership Roundtable on Northern Virginia Transit Consolidation Feasibility Study
ARLINGTON, Va. - The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) will host a Leadership Roundtable on Wednesday, October 21, to present findings from the Northern Virginia Transit Consolidation Feasibility Study and to examine their implications for regional bus service. The event is open to the public and will be streamed online. DRPT is accepting public comment at https://drpt.virginia.gov/studies-and-reports/northern-virginia-transit-consolidation-feasibility-study/ through Friday, October 23.
At the direction of the Virginia General Assembly, DRPT is evaluating the feasibility of consolidating Arlington Transit (ART), Alexandria Transit (DASH), Fairfax Connector, and Fairfax City CUE into a single regional bus system. The study examines potential service models alongside operational and financial considerations, governance and legal requirements, workforce impacts, and community perspectives.
The roundtable will bring together elected officials, transit and locality leaders, and labor representation to review the analysis and discuss the opportunities, risks and tradeoffs associated with different approaches. Roundtable participants will have an opportunity to share their perspectives and ask questions of DRPT and the study team.
The study is intended to inform future decisions, rather than recommend for or against consolidation. DRPT is scheduled to submit a report to the chairs of the Senate and House Transportation Committees by December 15, 2026.
Event details Date and time: Wednesday, October 21, 2026, 6-8 p.m. Location: Northern Virginia Transportation Commission 2300 Wilson Blvd, first floor meeting room Arlington, VA 22201
