DRPT to Host Public Meeting on 2026 Virginia Statewide Rail Plan
 The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) will host a virtual public meeting on Tuesday, September 8th, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. as part of its ongoing development of the 2026 Virginia Statewide Rail Plan.
This meeting will build on the initial June 1st public meeting. During this second session, project staff will review the feedback received to date through the surveys, the first public meeting, and three round of stakeholder meetings. Participants will have an opportunity to hear how their comments are shaping the planning process and to provide additional insight as the project team works toward a more responsive, community driven rail strategy.

The Statewide Rail Plan establishes a vision for the future of rail in Virginia, outlining both short term (six year) and long term (20 year) investment horizons. The plan will guide future improvements to passenger and freight rail service, including infrastructure, operations, and safety considerations across the state.
DRPT is seeking public feedback to ensure the updated plan reflects the needs and priorities of passengers, freight partners, and communities across the Commonwealth.
DRPT’s goal is to ensure that the Commonwealth’s rail needs for people, communities, and commerce are addressed, policies for future rail investments are consistent, the public is educated on current rail issues, and that rail transportation continues to be a safe, economical, and environmentally friendly mode choice.
DRPT encourages residents, business owners, and stakeholders from across Virginia to attend and share their input. Public feedback will play a critical role in shaping the future of the Commonwealth’s rail network.
