Commonwealth Transportation Board Approves 14 Projects to Improve Commutes Along I-66
Projects include new limited-stop bus routes, a new Metro station entrance and long-haul commuter bus routes
The Commonwealth Transportation Board approved the FY 2027-2028 I-66 Commuter Choice Program of Projects, including two new Metro Bus limited stop routes, a second entrance for the Ballston-MU Metro Station and other projects designed to move more people through the I-66 corridor.
Commuter Choice is a program of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, in partnership with the Commonwealth of Virginia, that reinvests toll revenues into projects that move more people through the region’s most traffic-congested corridors. The Program of Projects includes 14 projects totaling $60.5 million in grants to local governments and transit agencies.
Together, these projects will support an estimated 6,500 additional weekday trips in the I-66 corridor, saving 128,000 hours of travel time and reducing fuel costs for commuters by $3 million each year.

“As we celebrate 10 years of the Commuter Choice program, NVTC and the Commonwealth of Virginia continue to make smart investments in projects that improve commuting in Northern Virginia,” said NVTC Chair Sarah Bagley. “Projects funded through Commuter Choice make it easier for people to leave their cars behind, save money and reduce travel stress.”
“For more than a decade the Commuter Choice program has funded increased mobility options for millions of commuters enabling them to forgo the solo drive to work,” shared Mariia Zimmerman, Director of Virginia's Department of Rail and Public Transportation. “Projects funded through Commuter Choice help to take cars off of already congested interstates and provide safe, affordable and reliable transit service in Northern Virginia.”
Funding from the 2026 I-66 Program of Projects will be available to award recipients starting July 1, 2026. Find out more about the Commuter Choice program and funded projects at novatransit.org/cc.
