Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation Awards $625,100 grant to Drive Jobs and Rail Growth in Newport News
Today, the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) approved a $625,100 Rail Industrial Access (RIA) grant to Annandale Millwork & Allied Systems Corporation (Annandale Millwork) in the City of Newport News. This funding, administered by the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT), will support the construction of new rail infrastructure to serve the company’s expanding operations in Hampton Roads.
With a total capital investment of $11.5 million, Annandale Millwork will establish a new facility in Newport News, expanding its footprint beyond its existing operations in Winchester, Virginia. The CTB-approved project includes approximately 800 feet of new track, which will provide critical rail access to the facility, helping reduce local truck traffic and lower transportation costs for the company. The total track construction cost is estimated at $893,000.
Once complete, the new rail spur is expected to add approximately 200 rail cars annually to Virginia’s freight network and reduce truck traffic by an estimated 680 trips each year. The project also supports the creation of 150 new jobs, strengthening the regional economy and advancing industrial growth in the Hampton Roads area.
“This is exactly the kind of project we love to support. It supports job creation, reduces traffic congestion, and represents a great public-private partnership to create smarter transportation solutions to a growing region. That is a powerful combination for Virginia’s future,” said DRPT Director Mariia Zimmerman.
“We value our partnership with DRPT on this project,” said Annandale Millwork & Allied Systems Corporation President Rob Frogale. “This support helps us expand our capabilities to better serve the Richmond and Tidewater regions, create new employment opportunities, deliver high-quality products, and reduce truck traffic on Virginia’s roadways.”
Annandale Millwork & Allied Systems Corporation is a family-owned and operated company specializing in the production of structural building components, including roof trusses, wall panels, and other precision-engineered systems for residential and commercial construction. The company’s existing facility in Winchester employs 380 people and has established a strong reputation for quality and reliability in the construction industry.
The company applied for the RIA grant to support construction of a new rail spur at its Newport News facility, which will enhance freight capabilities and improve supply chain efficiency as the business continues to grow.
