Keeping Virginia Moving: Transit Operators Earn the Spotlight In March
Be sure to thank a transit operator! The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT), Virginia Transit Association (VTA), and Community Transportation Association of Virginia (CTAV) are teaming to proudly celebrate Transit Operator Appreciation Month, honoring the dedicated transit operators and agencies who keep communities across the Commonwealth moving every day.
Transit Operator Appreciation Day is recognized nationally on March 18. However, DRPT and its partners have been extending our gratitude all month long on social media to acknowledge the essential role operators play in connecting Virginians to jobs, education, healthcare, and critical services.
“Transit operators are the backbone of Virginia’s public transportation network,” said Danny Plaugher, Executive Director of the Virginia Transit Association. “Their smiles brighten our days, their focus gets us to our destinations safely, and their dedication keeps our communities and economy moving. This month gives us a meaningful opportunity to recognize the skill, dedication, and public service they demonstrate year-round.”
“In many of our rural communities, transit operators are more than drivers. They are a vital link to opportunity,” said Josh Baker, President of the Community Transportation Association of Virginia. “Whether it is helping someone get to a medical appointment miles away or ensuring a senior can access groceries and essential services, these operators play a critical role in keeping rural Virginia connected.”
Across 2,300 routes for 40 transit agencies in 107 localities, more than 2,500 transit operators navigate busy city streets, rural roadways, early mornings, late nights, and unpredictable conditions to ensure riders arrive safely and on time. Their dedication helps students reach school, workers reach jobs, patients reach healthcare, and families stay connected to the services they depend on.
"There is something special about the people operating Virginia’s buses and vans," said DRPT Director Mariia Zimmerman. "Take a moment to notice, and you’ll see how much transit operators do for the people they serve every day. Each ride is more than a trip; it's a vital lifeline and community connector. Transit Operator Appreciation Month is the perfect time to celebrate these hardworking individuals and thank them for keeping the Commonwealth moving every day."
Throughout March, DRPT, VTA, and CTAV are highlighting transit operators nominated by agencies across the Commonwealth as part of DRPT’s annual Transit Operator Appreciation social media campaign. These stories spotlight the people behind the wheel and the meaningful impact they have on the communities they serve.
