Virginia Celebrates Bike Month 2025 with Statewide Commuter Challenge
The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) invites Virginians to celebrate Bike Month this May by swapping their car keys for handlebars and biking to work. The annual campaign promotes healthier lifestyles, reduces traffic congestion, and helps people discover a more enjoyable way to commute.
Why Bike to Work?
Biking to work offers numerous benefits:
-
Health & Wellness: Cycling improves cardiovascular health, builds muscle, and reduces stress.
-
Cost Savings: Biking eliminates fuel costs, parking fees, and tolls.
-
Flexibility: Combining biking with public transit options increases commuting flexibility.
-
Environmental Impact: Replacing car trips with bike rides reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Resources are available at connectingva.org to help commuters transition to biking, including bikemaps, safety tips, and information on bike-friendly transit options. Many Virginia transit buses have bike racks, and systems like Metro and VRE allow bikes on board. Bike share programs are also available in areas like Richmond, Blacksburg, and parts of Northern Virginia.
Bike to Work, Win Big
During Bike Month, commuters who bike to work and log their trips using the ConnectingVA app will be automatically entered into a prize drawing. Two winners will be randomly selected to receive gift cards: one valued at $500 and another at $250. Eligible trips include any bike ride taken as part of your commute to and from work. The challenge celebrates those who choose pedal power for their daily commute and helps highlight biking as a practical, everyday transportation option.
