A Night with Arthur Brooks at ODU & Conversation with First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin – Mar. 26

Parent Resources
In collaboration with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Virginia ABC Community Health & Engagement division offers free Power of Parents handbooks and training to empower caregivers to have intentional and ongoing conversations with teens about the dangers of underage drinking and drug use. The evidence-based books have a wealth practical advice to help start the conversation, share the facts and keep lines of communication open with teens. Request free handbooks or schedule a training event for parents, online or in-person.

VDOE K-12 AI Showcase
We look forward to seeing you via Zoom on March 27 from 9a.m.-4 p.m. This day-long event is an opportunity to celebrate creative and innovative ways you’re using generative AI in your classrooms, schools, and districts. Attendees will have the opportunity to vote for presentation winners in several “best of” categories. Register today.

VDOE English Update
On February 27, 2025, the Virginia Board of Education will receive for initial review lists of recommended Virginia Literacy Act Supplemental and Intervention Programs for Grades 6-8.
Beginning February 20, 2025, the recommended 6-8 Supplemental and Intervention Programs will be available for a 30-day public review and comment period via the VDOE website. It is anticipated that the Board will take final action on the recommended lists of Virginia Literacy Act Supplemental and Intervention Programs for Grades 6-8 at its March 2025 meeting.   Additional information is available at Intervention Instructional Program Guide & Supplemental Instructional Program Guide | Virginia Department of Education webpage.

Mathematics Textbooks and Instructional Materials Approved by the Board of Education
On February 27, 2025, the Virginia Board of Education approved a list of K-12 Mathematics Textbooks and Instructional Materials, previously taken for initial review on October 24, 2024. All documents related to approved Mathematics Textbooks and Instructional Materials can be found on the Mathematics Textbook and Instructional Materials Review web page. In addition, an additional list of recommended K-12 Mathematics Textbooks and Instructional Materials was presented to the Board for initial review at the February 27, 2025 meeting and is anticipated to be presented to the Board for final approval at its March 2025 meeting.

March is National Literacy Month
Many schools across the Commonwealth kicked this off with Read Across American Week, celebrating reading with fun and engaging activities March 3-7.
Continue to encourage families to utilize the resources found on the VDOE website as well as the Family Supports for Reading in the Resource Hub. #EverybodyReadsVA

2025 Civics for All of US Teacher Institute    
Educators working with grades 3–12 are invited to apply to attend the 2025 Civics for All of US Teacher Institute with the National Archives in Washington, DC.  The institute will be offered twice: July 14–July 17 and July 29–August 1. Each week, 50 educators will learn how to use National Archives holdings to teach the civic knowledge and skills students need for civic engagement in the 21st century.  Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. The National Archives Foundation will provide a stipend to each participant. Full participation is required in order to receive the reimbursement. Applications are accepted by the National Archives Foundation through March 31.            

Opening Doors - Unlocking Potential-2025 (ODUP-2025)
This virtual professional development is an event bringing together professionals and parents from across the Commonwealth of Virginia to engage in dialogue, discussion, and learning methods to strengthen academic outcomes for children who are deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind to increase the knowledge and skills of those who can have a positive impact on a student’s educational process. We will use the Whova platform for this event, providing an interactive experience for attendees, including networking opportunities, session schedules, and event resources. Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project  
YADAPP is a year-long leadership program for high school students to address underage substance use through the development and implementation of a strategic prevention plan. The program kicks off this year with a week-long conference at Christopher Newport University, July 14-18. Teams of 4 student leaders and 1 Adult Sponsor attend the conference and attend sessions, trainings and keynotes that all lead to the development of their Strategies To Act Now (STAN) Plan. Registration is open from April 1 – June 1.

2025 Teacher Institute at Jamestown Settlement
Virginia elementary and secondary school teachers are invited to apply for this five-day, professional development program. Teachers will explore the three cultures – Powhatan Indian, English and West Central African – that converged at Jamestown in the early 17th century. Participating in authentic learning activities and collaborating with JYF staff and fellow teachers, participants will create lessons and activities they can use in the classroom for years to come. Applications are open until April 14 at 9 a.m.  

Gilder Lehrman Hosts 2025 National History Teacher of the Year
Nominations for any eligible K-12 teacher are due April 30 and must be submitted on the Gilder Lehrman website. Nominators are asked to provide contact information for themselves and information about the nominee, including a short statement about why the nominee should be honored. Nominations can be made by any individual who is familiar with the teacher’s work, including students, parents of students, colleagues, etc. Nominated teachers receive an email notification with instructions on how to submit all materials to be considered for the State History Teacher of the Year. Nominate an outstanding history teacher today.  

Innovation Summit
Registration is now open for the Innovation Summit Rethinking Learning and Teaching for the Future Across Virginia! Hosted by the ODU Center for Educational Innovation & Opportunity, this free professional learning conference showcases the innovative work of the Virginia College Partnership Lab Schools and other visionary educators and leaders. Join your peers on April 23-24, on the main campus of Old Dominion University, Norfolk.

Alcohol Awareness Month
The Virginia ABC Community Health & Engagement Division ’s Being Outstanding Leaders Together Against Drugs and Alcohol (BOLT) program provides free training and classroom resources for middle school personnel to implement substance use prevention activities. Take part in Alcohol Awareness Month in April and kick off your substance use prevention initiatives for the year with BOLT.

Join CodeVA for new learning bytes this spring. These one hour Bytes will provide educators with an understanding of the topic and some entry level resources to use with your students. Advancing Your Education
Join George Mason University for the Secondary Education info session on March 26 or April 16. The SEED program offers undergraduate and graduate licensure pathways with endorsement areas in biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science, English, history/social science, mathematics, and physics. Attendees receive an application fee waiver.

Wednesday Info Sessions #WoodULead
Thinking about a leadership position in the PreK-12 schools or central office? Longwood University’s Master of Science in Education with an Educational Leadership Concentration is a five-semester hybrid model designed for teachers aspiring to be leaders. The program meets only five Saturdays per semester on-campus; the remainder of learning occurs asynchronously online.  Our aspiring leaders learn to fuse theory with real-world relevance, analyze leadership through multiple viewpoints, and impact lasting change.
