2025 Computer Science Educator of the Year Nominations VDOE is accepting nominations for the 2025 Computer Science Educator of the Year. This is an opportunity to recognize educators who inspire students, foster innovation, and implement computer science. Educators in all grade levels, as well as instructional technology coaches, administrators, and school counselors are eligible. Students, parents, colleagues, administrators, and community members can submit a nomination as well as self-nominations. Nominations are due by Feb. 14. Black History Month Resources As our nation celebrates Black History Month, VDOE has provided school divisions with resources that honor the achievements and contributions of African Americans, recognizing their vital role in shaping America's history and culture. Local school divisions are encouraged to create and implement instructional and community programs that highlight Black history through an interdisciplinary approach, fostering inclusive, year-round lesson plans. Project HOPE-Virginia New Professional Development Resources Project HOPE-Virginia offers a Learning Library with new professional development resources that highlight best practices for teachers across the state on how to identify students experiencing homelessness to connect them with services. The webpage includes videos, tip sheets and more to support training on the McKinney-Vento Act and the educational rights of students experiencing homelessness.
George Washington Day Resources George Washington Day, sometimes called Presidents’ Day, gives Americans the opportunity to honor George Washington and the fascinating history of the American presidency. VDOE has outlined resources to provide schools with an opportunity to explore and expand upon content in the History and Social Science SOL.
VDOE K-12 AI Showcase: Request for Presentations The VDOE in partnership with Germanna Community College welcome proposals demonstrating practical, creative, and responsible uses of AI tools in educational settings. Successful proposals will be innovative and engaging, with high student impact and clear alignment with educational goals. The day-long showcase, scheduled for March 27 via Zoom will highlight creative and effective ways to integrate generative AI into K-12 education. Proposal submission deadline is February 18. Selected presenters will be notified by March 6.
Upcoming Zearn Professional Learning Sessions Register for one of the upcoming one-hour virtual professional learning sessions: Feb. 18 Grow with Zearn Data: Interpret classroom and individual student data and learn strategies for making data-driven decisions. Feb. 26 Monitor Learning Data in the Moment: Learn how to monitor usage data continuously to drive weekly improvements and respond to students’ needs. March 6 Monitor Learning Data Over Time: Explore how to track usage data over time to spot trends and address ongoing challenges.
National CTE Month Career and Technical Education is celebrated in February across the nation to recognize the achievements and accomplishments of CTE programs. Its theme, “Celebrate Today, Own Tomorrow!” provides Virginia schools an opportunity to celebrate and communicate the crucial role that CTE plays in preparing a highly skilled workforce for Virginia’s economy. VMFA Creator’s Workshop: Designing a Learning Experience for the Artist in Every Student Attend VMFA’s upcoming teacher workshop on February 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. to visit the galleries and gain innovative ideas and activities for interdisciplinary learning. All teacher programs are aligned with Virginia SOL and model strategies for integrating works of art across K-12 curricula. Registration is required for this free workshop.
2025 Teacher Institute at Jamestown Settlement Join fellow classroom educators at Jamestown Settlement this free summer Institute. Through hands-on learning activities and presentations, participants will gain a deeper understanding of early Virginia history. Participants will be provided the tools, strategies, and some reproduction artifacts that will help them bring history to life. VAST Making Science Accessible for English Learners The Virginia Association of Science Teachers has launched a free virtual Professional Learning. In the next session, K-12 science teachers will learn high-leverage practices that can be use in the science classroom to make instruction more comprehensible for English learners. Understanding AI's Role in the Humanities Classroom This hands-on workshop is designed specifically for middle and high school English and History/Social Studies teachers. Through interactive sessions, participants will explore the fundamentals of AI, its practical applications in the classroom, and strategies for addressing its ethical implications. Pathways for Authentic Teaching of Health Sciences Institute Applications are now open for the 2025 PATHS Institute for secondary teachers, focusing on innovative health sciences curricula and career pathways. Cohort 3 starts in Summer 2025 with a 5-day hybrid professional development program It includes virtual sessions on June 18 and July 11 and in-person training in Richmond from July 7-9. National Youth Science Camp The NYSCamp is a residential science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics program open to current high school juniors or seniors. Two students will be selected to represent Virginia as delegates in this fully in-person experience. It will take place from July 10 to August 2 and is offered at no cost to the selected participant. Deadline is February 28.
Study Science. Do Science. Summer Camp for Students The Virginia Tech College of Science is now accepting applications for five residential summer science camps for students in grades 7-12. Topics will include microbiology, neuroscience, physics, nanoscience, data science and more. Costs are associated with each camp and need-based scholarships are available. Virginia Junior Academy of Science Research Symposium-May 31 Students in grades 7-12 who wish to enter the VJAS Research Symposium may submit their research paper by February 21. The 2025 Symposium will be a hybrid event where students may present in-person at Ferrum College or attend synchronously via Zoom. Membership in the VJAS is free. VJAS is also seeking judges both virtually or in person.
